Health Insurance South Dakota

My wife has run into a dilemma about health insurance in South Dakota. We've been full-timers for the past three years and sold our home and no longer have an "official residence". We are using Americas Mailbox services in South Dakota for our mailing address. We've registered our trailer and tow vehicle in South Dakota. Additionally we have South Dakota drive licenses. She had Humana insurance last year, but this insurance plan is no longer available. She applied for another plan in South Dakota through the Federal Government Market place website and was informed that she was eligible for health insurance. The insurance company informed us that we will need a utility bill with a South Dakota address. Without the utility bill they would deny her application. Contacted the Federal Market place and were referred to the South Dakota Insurance Division. The insurance division informed us that there are no health care plan available for us without having a means of verifying our residency (aka utility bill)
in South Dakota.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Help please. Thanks Jim

I would get in touch with the people at AMB, surely they have run into this situation before. They've been very helpful to us in the past.

sorry to hear of your issue. it seem that is happening all over..

A lot of full timers have make the switch to florida for that very reason. If you check out Healthcare & Health Insurance Options for Full Time RVers | Technomadia or these guys Health Care Wheeling It as they had the same issues with SD and a may be ready to "move" to florida. They may be domiciled in Texas which is having issues as well.

I have a local RV guy that "lives" in SD and had the same issue he was telling me earlier this year..

MRPREZ and CARL2591;

Thanks for the info and the quick reply. It looks like there might be an option or two. My wife will be Medicare eligible in 15 months. Here's hoping nothing major happens between now and then. Again thanks.

Contact the guys at benefitgeek.com. They can get you insurance without verifying your address through a bill. I'm in the same situation. Had zero problems getting insurance and they even saved me some money.

So do we, but not everyone can get Federal BCBS.

Al - K4GLU and MRPREZ;

If you have Medicare you can be enrolled with BCBS or other plans in South Dakota, but my wife is 16 months from being Medicare eligible. Please let me know if you are not receiving Medicare, as I would like to discuss how you were able to get enrolled without providing things like a the utility bill. Again thanks for your information. Jim

We are not eligible for Medicare yet. My wife is a retired Federal employee and all we had to do was to change our address with FedBlue. No questions asked at all.

MRPREZ;

That makes sense. I don't we would qualify for FedBlue as neither one of us had work for the Federal government. I'm assuming that would be a requirement.

Yes, it is one of the many medical plans Federal employees can choose from.

SO that make that option not an option for many that domicile in SD, hence the issue is still a problem for many RVers.

I never said it was an option. I was asked how I got insurance in SD and I answered.

Yes you are right.. but you have to remember that when "someone" ask a question and you reply it a good idea to also let other readers of the post know there are "special conditions" to get the insurance you enjoy.

Just saying you have "Federal Blue Cross" does not tell the whole story, as you can see by the replys.

That could imply a company name of sorts, not that is is only available for "federal employees".

but hey good for you.. one nice perk of putting up with government office place politics

If you go back and reread you will see that I said my wife is a retired federal employee.

I wonder if these guys can help? Looks like the trend is against the fulltimer who retires early. What a mess.

KJRitchie;

I've been in contact with them and same issue of the insurance plans requiring a utility bill with an address. Thanks for the suggestion. Jim

Other limitation with SD seems to be that coverage outside the state was a challenge as the few companies remaining in their HCA marketplace wanted a minimum of 6 months in SD. But Kyle at RVer Insurance is 'da man' when it comes to this stuff. Good luck.
