Full Time, Now in a 2014 Flying Cloud

Hello Everyone! This is the follow up thread to my thread about living full time in a 1968 Streamline Empress in the great state of Alaska. June of this year we upgraded to a 2014 Airstream Flying Cloud 25' Front Bed. Love the trailer! It does not seem as tank-like as the Empress, but the ease of modern makes up for it. I know many folks are going to be interested in what we do to winterize, and I will provide details as I figure the out! I'm still not decided on a secondary heat source ( in addition to the propane furnace). I am debating three options for this winter.

1. Kimberly Wood stove
2. Oil Burning (Diesel) Nordicstove Heater
3. Winter in the lower 48 this year and figure out heat next year

The oil stove and the Kimberly are very similar in size and weight but very different in BTUs and cost. The Kimberly is very costly but high BTUs. Oil stove is much less BTUs but 1/4 of the price. They are both very attractive stainless stoves and I am set on having an install that aesthetically pleasing and doesn't look thrown together.

I do have one major recommendation for new airstream full timers, caulk the bottom of the wood around the shower with clear silicone. After one month of use we have already seen the beginning of wood damage.

I'm putting the smallest AIRTIGHT Jotul in my 85 Excella and venting it out the window like you did in your other trailer.Triple wall pipe and custom sheet metal frame. Hoping for the best because that's what I've got. Still trying to figure out the sheetmetal insulation for the wwalls around the stove.

I uploaded the photos by choosing the advanced option and the video upload. Huh? I pulled the cabinet out and the stove will go right in that corner. Antique Heart Pine engineered floor.

I like the floor! I will love to see the finished product! The window is really the way to vent, I spoke with a professional installer and he also recommended going out a side window with the piping vs through the roof as well.

Janeinthemtns,

After you chose the photo(s) you have to click the upload button.

... Wait for the "upload" to complete. Then close the "advanced" window. Before closing window the pic should be listed halfway down the page. Must scroll to see on iPhone.

For some reason I thought you were getting a 30ft. Is this new one smaller than your previous trailer?

The new trailer is shorter, but the space seems to be working just fine. I love the shorter trailer for towing in town!

Subed. I work out of anchorage and loved your previous thread and will follow along this one. Are you going to skirt this new one this winter? You need more pics of the new trailer/setup.

You going to add a stove to the new one or just using the furnace?

We generally stick to the Kenai Pennsula and Anchorage Area, but we are planning a trip up to Chena Hotsprings this fall!

I think so! It will likely be next year although, we may head south for the deep of winter this year and run the propane for the other winter months.
