We always kept a harness and short lead on the cat while traveling, in case I needed to catch her. Found I could get within 3 ft, then she would bolt so the lead gave me the ability to catch/control. Cat always traveled in a cage in the truck, and we left the cage open in the trailer but facing the wall under the table which she used as refuge when she wanted to escape the persistence of our Fox Terrier. Eventually the Dog and Cat get to a point of understanding, if not really friendly. Our Katie actually went to the dog to get her face cleaned after a few months...go figure!
Be patient and it usually works out.
