Passengers in Hybrid?

Does anyone know the laws re: having passengers in a hybrid/travel trailer while motoring down the highway? Izzit allowed? Any particular issues?

I think carrying passengers in any trailer is illegal in almost every state.

In Pennsylvania passengers are permitted in fifth wheel type trailers that have a actual method of voice communication between the passengers in the trailer and the operator of the truck.

This would need verified with State Police

The biggest reason hauling passengers in a trailer is no seat belts

Bad idea

I would not do it

I've sat in our trailer while it's moving for short periods of time; moving to a new campsite in a park, to the dump station, a few minutes on road. It's a bumpy ride in there and wouldn't be too comfortable even if it was legal.

OK, I just noticed you have a MOTORHOME. That's an entirely different situation than a trailer. In a trailer occupants would become human ping pong balls.

In newer motorhomes the question is "Do you have a seatbelt, and are you using it?" As far as I know you're fine in the motor home as long as you're seated and strapped in. See the Duggers and their 19 kids. Lots of idiots think it's fine to go to the restroom or take a nap on the sofa while someone else is driving. It's not. (I personally know a man who lost his fiancee when they decided to have some coffee, and she got up went to the stove, brewed a pot, then brought two cups forward just as he hit a pothole... She lost her balance and fell against the right side door, which opened. She went under the drive and tag axles. He was in a psych ward for weeks and 8 years later still isn't right.)

Most people with moho's use a "toad" (or towed car)... I suppose some DO drive it and carry family members, but far more only use it after the moho is set up on a campsite.

Happy trails, Paula

Foiled is right on. We had a MoHo and multiple people went with us for short trips - all had seat belts. Some states require them on your pets as well. We also towed a Jeep or Toad, we never had anyone in there while being towed, except when testing out the Buddy Brake in the Toad. It's an interesting experience, riding down the road behind a 13'7" MoHo while riding in the passenger seat watching to see if the brake buddy box sitting on the floor of the Jeep activates when it is supposed to.

Enjoy

What is your definition of a "hybrid/travel trailer"?
Until we know for sure, we are spinning our wheels giving you answers.

When I read your question I envisioned a "hybrid/travel trailer" as a tow vehicle/travel trailer modified so that one could travel into the trailer from the tow vehicle through a rear door in the tow vehicle, without having to stop to use the side doors. (like train cars) If that is the case, it's done in some city bus systems.

I think it would be really difficult to accomplish with a travel trailer. The tongue length puts the trailer too far behind to create a safe walkway. And, the connector would be a sloping ramp, due to the differences in floor level.

I'm not sure about the accuracy, but this website spells out what I thought the answer will be. Confusing!

Another reason not to carry passengers - RV's (including many motorhomes that I have seen) pretty much blow apart in any type of severe accident. I sure wouldn't want to be in one in that situation.

What is a hybrid/travel trailer? Google is no help on this one.

After more searching all I can come up with is a trailer with pull out tents attached. Is this correct?

That is what we sell at our dealership. An example of a brand name would be a Roo. They are hard-sided travel trailers with canvas or vinyl bunk ends that fold out like a popup camper. They are called hybrid trailers.
