door handle - locked in!

Life just keeps giving
I closed the door while inside
And then could not get out
I called the wife on my cell phone to let me out and yes that was pain-full by itself--
So After taking the three screws out of the door assembly it seems the whole assembly shifted down 1/4 inch and the interior handle would not move the other latch to open the door.
The outside works perfect. So I put a shim under the handle to keep it up in position, and replaced the three screws
Now this is a 2000 this had to happen before it seems the opening they made is too big.
So is my fix good or just a temporary thing and is there a bigger problem, It was quite un /nerving being locked in your own rig !!!
Any thoughts
Rob

Rivet Trapped Inside

Last year I tried to open the door on the Trade Wind and was unable to get it to budge trapping me inside. The bolt, the part of the lock that sticks into the hole in the doorframe, had broken and was blocked from retracting. When I tried to dismantle the lock by removing the interior cover, the head of one of the internal screws stripped out. I had to pry the mechanism apart without damaging the door to get the door open so I could remove the old lock. After damaging the lock by prying it open, I had to drill out the 39 pop-rivets and remove the interior skin of the door.

Maybe too late..

We've done this several times. (How embarassing). Thank God for very small friends that we could lift through the window and have them open from the inside.

This drives me crazy and we are very careful now. It may or may not be the same problem. However, when we have the screen door slide shut, then slam the outer door shut, the handle won't work from the outside. It prohibits the movement of the interior handle. So, when ever we exit, we have to check that the screen door plastic panel is open (you know so you can access the handle from inside).

Do you think that's the problem?

Not the same problem as mine, however the same result, I would hang out the passenger window with a broom and use the handle to open the door from the outside, very funny for the people next door to me, not so funny for me.
After a few beers I was better, anyway
Mine was the whole latch assembly slide down about an 1/8 of an inch
which would not let the inside handle engage horizontal latch that goes into the wall
