Is the replacement a remanufactured or new unit?
What was the intermittent problem, no start, red light, low voltage?
Inspect battery, alternator and starter wiring for corrosion, loose connections and continuity.
It's possible the replacement alternator has a bad diode pac/open circuit.

So when is this..."old enough to know better" supposed to kick in?
