Skydeck

Did you ever wonder where the Skydeck came from?

Thor West, California, in a mojor downsize move, closed/sold the California motorhome division (1999) to management and it was renamed MountainHigh Coach Works
Thor agreed to carry some of the dept, etc, but the new company went belly up in 2001.
This company was then bought out by Gordie Hakes and renamed MHC and they tried to market the Skydeck which they had been developing before the previous closure.

The new company never made it and looks to me like Thor still had some link to the development ideas and used them to market their own Airstream Skydeck.

Form you own opinion after reading this.

One could buy this new shell and have AIRSTREAM finish it and have a brand new AIRSTREAM MOTORHOME.

Wow that would be a sight - a motorcoach with an Interstate as a toad....

Currently that won't be an easy task.

As of now, there are no front frame brackets available for the new 2011 Mercedes Sprinters that will allow you to attach a set of tow bars to pull the Sprinter (I know, I tried Roadmaster and they have not yet made a set for the 2011, which is slightly different from the 2010 that does not fit).

Plus, they will have to have a custom drive shaft made with a Remco drive line disconnect spline. Remco also does not have an installation ready unit for the newer Sprinters.

Knowing Newell Coach, if one of their clients wants an Interstate as a toad, they surely WILL make it happen!

Can anyone out there enlighten me on, how long AS has to legally keep parts and service for the XC and XL models?

On another note, I read in the Nov. issue of Trailer Life that Winnebago has started making travel trailers again. They haven't made them since 1983. They must have the same basic ideas about the big motor homes and are testing the waters in the travel trailer market again..

I need to make a slight correction to Ffred's post. Airstream has never marketed a "C" coach and, per their latest presentation at the Region 5 Rally, "does not want to participate in the "C" market. For 2013, they are concentrating on perfecting their current market offerings of trailers and "B" coaches".

Clipper

This is a site that lists the many models and years of Airstream products.
Airstream - car safety information, failing parts, recalls, bulletins, complaints

Notice the CLIPPER Class A is not mentioned. Production #s were just not enough to be recognized.

Lewster, Newell is outfitting the new Interstate they sell to tow behind the big Newell Coaches. Ian, Newell/Interstate salesman told me a few weeks ago they are using the ""Demco"" brand tow baseplate with the Blue Ox Aventa Towbar rated at 10,000lb. Newell is using the "Remco" Lube Transmssion pump so the Interstate/Sprinter's transmission is placed in 'neutral" to tow. "REMCO IS NOT DEMCO."
Newell Coach out of Miami OK, in its origination has its roots back to the Silver Streak travel trailer back in California.
L.K. Newell wanted a motorhome back in the 60's and had Silver Streak do it. After several renditions, L.K. Newell didn't like what he saw. Silver Streak owner told Newell, buy the company if you think you can do better. Newell bought, and moved everything to OKla and the rest is history,.
By the way, Newell's have full aluminum-clad side panels which are painted.

Hey Jim,

Newell told me that they were doing that when they decided to become an Airstream dealer. I service most of the Newells in SW Florida. It should be an interesting combination of components. Can't wait to see one.
