Airstream Class A Diesel Pushers Available

This will be a thread to inform those, who may be interested in purchasing an Airstream Class A Diesel Pusher fiberglass unit, of availability on locations other that eBay.

These quality diesel pushers were manufactured in various lengths from 32' to 39' from the early 90's up to the date of discontinue in late 2007.

If properly maintained these units should last many years, but as usual, you the buyer, will be responsible for all due diligence before purchase.

These adds will go dead over time, but will be of help for those looking.

This one below is available now in Ontario, Canada.

That one sure has a luxurious interior!

Is $59,000 a pretty typical price for that vehicle?

I would say this is a very fair price for this unit if it is in as good condition as it looks. Stored inside? Glass "Silver Leaf VMS" control module on it.
http://www.silverleafelectronics.com/

Very similar to the "Clipper" but on a straight rail frame I believe so lighter chassis.

Here is a 39' "A" that is about as good as you will get. (inspection required to confirm condition)

Single slide, as in the unit posted above, simplifies it a bit but the extra length, and height, gives good living and storage.

This has the last version front clip used on the raised rail chassis.

Available now in Ohio.(300 miles from the factory) Priced at $85000. is less than 25% of the cost of what it would sell new for today.

Now if this unit still had the mid mount door located at the kitchen/lounge division, I'd even be interested.

With the aluminium framing above the floor, as long as they weren't leaker's, they should last forever.

And an almost new 2007, with the desirable CUMMINS, hardly broken in at 25000 miles.

Also still has Propane which gives you 4 energy choices. (120V/12V/Propane/Diesel) which makes for a great off grid RV. Two slides is probably one more than I would want for travel. Again, if it only had that mid mount door.

Here is an 2006 A37 located in Florida. Nicely equipped and a good starter motorhome.

This A37 is on the raised rail chassis which should give a bit more storage than the earlier straight rail XC series.

Three slides on this if you need the room.

Available now on SALE @ $140,000.00 ( must be a good one)

Here is another CW Airstream 390XL located in Albuquerque with 45000 miles on it. Single slide. Looks to be well kept. They were asking $74500, buy this should sell for considerably less (for cash) as it is now beyond the 10 yr old rule for bank financing.

Very Interesting. Looks like you can get a 10+ year old MH that has been well cared for for about not much more than a new diesel truck TV.

Sunday night is story time.

98 AIRSTREAM CUTTER 34*75K MILES*7K GEN 280 HRS*VERY CLEAN!! in RVs & Campers | eBay Motors

This motorhome has NCC of 1384 lbs.

OK -- the trip of a lifetime.

So - - you and your wife are preparing for a trip with your Mother-in-law, and your Mother, to your Sister-in-law's wedding. (already you should see a problem?)

The first night out is going to be a WalMart stop as you have to travel over 500 miles to the ranch site of the wedding.

You top off with good water as the ranch water has a bit of a sulphur taste. (74 gals x 8.345 lbs/gal) = 600lbs

You top off with Propane as the nights are cool and you expect the furnace will be used. add 110 lbs.

You are a tall hunk (thats why she picked you?) of solid muscle and weigh in at 245lbs.

Your beautiful lifetime partner is perfect at 128 lbs.

Her Mother is also slim but tall and comes in at 162 lbs.

Your Mother is tall and a bit more on the solid side and tops out at 179 lbs.

Both Mothers bring 2 suitcases each + carry-ons and winter jackets and boots. add 136lbs.

Your wife likes to show off her youthful figure, and has the majority of the wardrobe filled with HER stuff. add 92 lbs.

You realize you have to travel a bit lighter so a complete wedding suit is all your bring other than a three day rotation of casual wear. 32lbs.

We need some groceries as ,with all these women, there is no need to eat out at a restaurant right? Groceries, wet and dry, add 80lbs.

You need a 12pack of beer and nuts to relax that first night out.(believe me you are going to need it ) add 25 lbs.

Your wife now asks you to store the wedding present! WHAAAAT? add 54lbs.

The ladies point out that they won't be driving so they might have some fancies to relax. Hard stuff and mix. add 34lbs.

You remember that everytime you guys go anywhere in the motorhome you always need tools to repair something. Tools add 37lbs.

Everyone has their own electronics and you just installed the sat. dish. add 50lbs.

This unit only has 1384lbs of carrying capacity. Are we there yet?

We have also supplied the bath room with necessary supplies. add 17lbs.

Bedding for everyone. add 22 lbs.

WOW 2003lbs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

619 lbs over the max capacity of the unit. Did you blow up those tires?

Your Mother-in-law suggests you empty the water tank and just use bottled water.
(two beer gone down fast )

Now, hard decisions need to be made! Who's going to fly to the destination?

Two Mothers = 341 lbs

They will only take the one small case each and carry-on and leave the heavy cases and other stuff for you to take. 71lbs

You can't take the groceries or the liquor back so the only thing left is to also send the gorgeous wife on the plane with her overnight bag. 155lbs.

Enough?

Only totals 567 lbs.

Need another 52lbs to be legal.

Dump the satellite dish and box and leave the tools. approx 52lbs.

PHEWWWW Now we are legal to go.

Drop the ladies at the airport. Now that you are finally on the way you can relax. Running about 4 hours behind your planned departure so you will have to push it a bit but now its dark.

It was a long day so maybe a short power nap will help? A lot of noise at the rest area so a beer or two will drown that and ease the tightness from all the challenges.

7 hours later and you wake to the bright sun with a start. Holy Cow, you have to get moving. The wedding is this evening at 5PM and you have 480 miles to go on mostly state and secondary roads.

This is getting to be a real challenge. Grab a couple bananas and a loaf of bread to take to the cockpit. Nothing but Redbull to drink.

Go - go - go.

Why is this engine overheating now? Ease off on the throttle. You have to stop to see what is wrong. (and make a pit stop) All seems OK, just asking too much from the engine.

Pull into the wedding site at 4:50 PM. "Where to HE## were you? We've been waiting for you all day!"

Grab a beer to relax a bit. You have the shakes from the Redbull. While your wife is changing ,your Mother-in-Law offers you a drink that will fix you up. You don't have time to eat as everyone wants to look at your Airstream Motorhome. Another drink.

I could go on, but you get the picture.

You should have spent a bit more in the beginning to buy the proper sized motorhome that will do the job you might expect it to do.

A quality diesel pusher on a HD chassis that will not be overloaded before you leave home.

Skydeck

Here is a Skydeck that looks to be in good shape and reasonably priced.

The Airstream Skydeck was a bold move into the highend market of show motorhomes.

It was designed to be the entertainment center for the family or crew at large events, whether NASCAR, equestrian, or just the local family reunion.

I have never been able to see one of these live, but I am impressed with the attempt Airstream made to make this idea work for the limited market it appeals too.

One thing I think Airstream missed the mark on with this model was the fact they seemed stuck on the 39' length. This restricted the interior layout choices. (they even made a few of these in gasoline powered models?)

This unit came with one slide. ( that is acceptable as numerous slides are not what I would want)

But I think in hind-site, that if Airstream had expanded this line to a 42' to 45' 3 axle model, that the extra carrying capacity, extra storage (wet and dry), extra stability that extended wheel bases give, and the increased option on the main floor that this would have allowed, would have delivered a winning combination for that luxury show motorhome that this market demands.

The few units that become available now are past their desirability for those that originally purchased this type of motorhome. And they are attractive to only a small number of RVr's that are buying older used motorhomes. The maintenace, I would think, would require constant attention to detail, but if you think you have the time and abilty, then these units are generally available at a very affordable price.

I know this is an Airstream thread, but it is always nice to compare brands of the same era to the unit I presently own. To compare my 1996 CLIPPER to this NEWELL click on my 'images' in the left sidebar.

There is presently a NEWELL coach on eBaY - - [moderator edit at request of masseyfarm -- the Newell sold and the dead ebay link has been removed]

This looks like a very well kept unit and the price is not bad for the perceived quality of the brand although this is a 1996.

Airstream never made a Class A larger than 39' so keep that in consideration when you look at what appears to be loads of room in the 45' Newell. Surprisingly, the basement storage does not appear to be that much larger than a 390XL Class A.

What I would want to inspect closely if I was on location on a purchasing trip would be:

any signs of water damage to the steel structure as most everything else can be repaired/replaced if you have the $$$$$$. (I have never been up close to a NEWELL so my comments come from other historical complaints of high end units including Prevost and MCI.)

There are a number of things that I like on this Newell, but for same price I can buy a 2005 390 XL with less than half the mileage, so you have to love the unit to make it work.

Collector Series

So you think your Airstream Motorhome is a collector item.

How about one of these?

Triple E Empress, built in Canada for four seasons, and very hard to come by as few were built.

I asked Dean last spring if he would restart production with a mid entry door and some other minor changes, but the reply was no.

This unit is currently for sale in British Columbia.

Triple E had previously made a mid entrance door and one of those 1999 units is also for sale in BC at this time. (Last Picture)

You don't always get what you pay for.

I captured this off another site that deals with one of the most popular, upper end, RV Class A diesel pusher OEM's with integrated chassis. This was a new 09 show model that was purchased in the summer 08 and details the first 3 months of ownership.

__________________________________________________ ____________

"We bought 09 **************. The following has happened since:
1. step lights and bars wouldn't light
2. molding on frig. fell off
3. bed slide out only worked while manually pushing it
4. starter motor broke and wired incorrectly @ factory, requiring $1,000 tow for repair & took 3 weeks!!!
5. flat tire on tag wheel passenger side (no spare till now)
6. broken drain @ galley sink with water damage to bedroom carpet
7. air leak in leveling system, causing axillary pump to run every 3 minutes (no sleeping due to sound) still not repaired
8. delivered with broken antennas on roof
9. leaking toilet letting sewer water drain throughout flooring
10. cauking on bedroom window missing, so first rain caused water to run onto bedding
11. coach delivered without extra keys & fob!!!! and missing battery filler devise.
12. recall on Cummins engine (needs computer reprogramming)
13. missing cover on outside engine air duct (ordered, not received)
14 entry door jammed so won't lock
15 generator delivered needing 2 quarts of oil.
16. left mirror camera stopped working
17. roof leak at front a/c unit
18. macerator hosing developed hole and leaked poo to flooring
19. windshield popped out !!!!! during heavy rain storm
20. sliding door at bedroom/bath fell from mounting
21. glass door at closest cracked due to screws in mounting
22. ceiling light wiring broken needing rewiring
23. front door latch won't catch
24. satellite antenia shorted out, frying 2 receivers!!!!!
25. molding at driver window fell off

JUST AMAZING WHAT YOU GET FOR $500,000"
__________________________________________________ _________

The moral of this story is-- if your paying the big bucks try to buy from an OEM or dealer that will support the product. And "if something can go wrong it will".

We Airstream Class A Owners are lucky we don't have to spend time waiting on warranty.

Its been here awhile so the price should be negotiable if you are interested.

Welcome to the Air Forums.

Looks like a nice unit. If that is the correct mileage, it has hardly been driven.

If this unit has been well maintained, with no signs of water leakage, you should have a Class A that will last a long time.

Are they giving any warranty on this unit? 30 days?

This, I believe, has the CAT engine. My personal preference is the CUMMINS but I don't think AIRSTREAM went back to CUMMINS till about 2005.

You would have to check the sn, but I think this unit only has a 5000# hitch capacity. It was sometime in 2003 before they were upgraded to 10000#.
