Well I attempted to start the generator yesterday. I drained the fuel in the line and ran the pump till I got fresh fuel. It took a while but it did eventually start. The problem is, I was never able to keep it running without holding what I think is a choke partially closed. No room to work on it so it looks like I'm going to have to drop the unit for a closer inspection. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get it out? It looks to me like I'm going to have to jack up the RV to get clearance from underneath.

I have a 1993 LY with the same 7000 genset. If you decide to tackle this project please post steps on what was involved. Airstream really missed the boat with this design, it's ridiculous you can't even remove the side cover without droping the whole generator.

Local RV center just quoted me $300 to drop and reinstall the genset. They're saying if I bring in the RV to service the genset, they'll have to schedule the repair some time in the future. If I just bring in the genset, then they can work it in between jobs. Looks like, if I do it myself, I can save the $$$ and some time.

What I'm thinking is to jack up the genset side of the RV and put it on some (4) 6-ton jack stands. I should be able to get it high enough to drop the genset using a floor jack onto a couple of 4x4's. I can then just slide it out from underneath. I do have a 20-ton jack to jack it up but the jack can only lift about 8”. I may have to jack it up several times to get it high enough.

I'm thinking I’ll jack it up. I’ll then put the jack stands under, let it down onto the jack stands and then put the blocks under the jack in order to raise it up. I can then jack it up some more and extend the jack stands further or put blocks under the jack stands if they’re at the safe limit. I think I'll have to raise the RV by about 16" before I'll be able to clear the genset and the 4x4's. The reinstall process should just be the reverse.

If I decide to do this I'll post pictures of the process.

Any suggestions on what else should be done while the genset is out? I was going to go ahead and replace all the plugs and filters. The RV center suggested replacing the fuel pump as well. It only has 414 hours on it but it’s been sitting for at least 8 years.

Sound like you have a jet clogged. Do you have to remove the generator to get to the carb?

A friend last month bought a motorcycle jack for less than a hundred that might be worth getting for the job. Found online coupons combined with store specials.
I was going to use but with serious looking I found tailpipe(mh) was in way and genset tailpipe would need to be removed. I needed to replace second sp so I cut the shroud and gave enough room to go between frame and genset. For the fuel pump, it is mounted with just enough room to get to it but you need a mirror and flashlight to see. Would have been nice if AS would have made it more convenient to service, Onan prices are double what you were quoted. I have the bill's PO left for me.

I played with the smaller version of one of these. It had a mechanic governor which basically controlled the cycles yours may or may not. I had it mounted on a 4 wheel cart so I could move it around. It had very few hours. The end game was I gave it to my nephew and bought a Honda genset. The issue was It was just a little to old to have the modern control systems and always needed tweaking. I did replace the fuel pump once just used an electric pump from the auto-store. I would get an electrician out and put a dummy load on it and have the governor adjusted under load, with today electronic gear clean power is a must. I used an old Kiln I had to load up the unit for adjustments, you may not have one laying around. Don't interpret my comments as negative they are what they are, If I owned the unit I would get it tweaked, verified for performance and put it back in. Blue lock tight any bolts or screws you remove, it will serve you well.

Clean out all the vent tubes... each year mine are clogged with dirt dobbers nests.
Put a spray paint gun filter on them, better now.

If you are gonna pull the genset out for repairs, check the oil filler tube.
Might be worth doing what Bkahler did by putting it on slides... I copied and it just makes everything easier for the future...
Here is the thread...
BKahler's link is in his first post..

Dropped the genset today. Not too bad of a job.

Pretty much did the following:
Remove the muffler (2 bolts and a nut)
Disconnect AC power lines
Disconnect fuel line (Used vice grips to crimp rubber fuel line after to stop leaking)
Unplug remote start plug
Disconnect +12DC Starter
Jack RV up about 8"
Dig 4" deep trough under jack to allow genset to clear jack (not needed if you can jack the unit up higher)
Place floor jack under genset with board to distribute weight
Remove 8 1/2" bolts (4 on each side)
Lower genset
Disconnect -12v cable
Slide genset out from under

Took about 1.5 hours total

Unit now sitting in the garage and ready to be serviced.
