Stiff shift

The gearshift lever on the steering wheel is so stiff i use two hands and a lot
of muscle to shift thru P-R-N-D. This is a 1998 chevy 454 land yacht auto trans. The chevy dealer said engine heat caused the plastic sheath on the wire linkage from steering column to transmission to bind. I was told the link was no longer made Help please.

The shifting lever on my 1993 LY was doing the same thing. What helped was spraying a penetrating lubicant on end of wire linkage cable at transmission and having someone continually shifting while spray was being applied, it eventually freed up. I did this a couple years ago and it has been fine. Also re-coated it with lithium grease.

Many thanks for a simple solution. I never found the cable linkage on the internet. I now keep spray oil and lithium grease onboard. Sincerely, Bizzie

Motorcycle shops have a lube system designed for control cables. It consists of an aluminum (aluminium) block with a molded rubber liner that fits over the cable end and a spray can of lubricant that attaches to it to force lube up the sheath along the cable. I use this set up to lubricate transmission kick-down cables on cars when they get sticky. Here is one example:
