Satellite radio with a Land Yacht
Since we're planning on doing some travel this year (we leave next week from Ontario to go to Bozeman), I decided to put in satellite radio (in my case I chose Sirius). I bought a typical kit from Costco, but when I read the installation instructions it became evident that getting the antenna to provide decent reception was going to be a challenge. When I was at the Region 2 rally last week I asked around, and one owner of a 345 motorhome showed me that he had purchased the type of antenna used by the truckers that attaches to the West Coast mirror - it doesn't need a ground plane (something that requires major modification in the case of a fiberglass rig). He purchased his antenna from one of the Flying J truck stops for $25.
I searched around the 401 corridor between London and Toronto, and ended up buying the trucker package - consists of the regular automotive tuner package and the trucker antenna for $107. (I returned the $180 package to Costco).
Got the antenna attached to one of the horns on the roof, snaked the wire down near where the horn wire was, and got the whole kit running. I'm now having a nice bracket built to hold the tuner to the dash.
Many thanks to Howard Lefkowitz for his idea. It works perfectly!
