Onan Generator - whines

Sounds like starter gear, for lack of a better description, is not engaging to turn over generator engine. Worked fine until now. Just wines now. Any suggestions?

Mine did the same in September while on the road in Baltimore. Cummins dealer happened to be three miles away. Bad starter, did not have one in stock, "gave" me a used one and charged for labor only. Works fine now. I watched how it was done and not something I would attempt as the unit must be loosened and the whole thing dropped down about 6"-1' to get the starter out. Find a Cummins dealer and have them do it. Don't know what a new starter costs. Good luck.

Onan

My did the same thing. Found a Bendix repair kit for $36.69
that fixed the problem. (The spring gets weak.) the RV parts
place said its' a common problem with old Onan's.
Part # 191-2187 "Drive Kit Assy." Or Starter Bendix Kit

Well the local RV service center wants to sell me a new starter for $ 250.00 and about 2.5 hors labor. They say that if they use a bendix repair kit they will only warrant the kit and that if anything else goes wrong ie brushes with the starter they will have to lower it and fix it again at full labor. I am sorry to say I don't trust them but they are the only dealer in town. Next closest is 3 hours away. What do you think? Should I take my chances on the Bendix repair kit alone?

It sounds like typical dealer talk to me. Your original post said it sounded like the bendix, so I'd try just that.

Onan bendix

What I've always found is that when I find a guy that fixes instead of replacing stuff, he' generally right and honest. Kind of like a doctor telling you that you have some arterial blockage and need a heart transplant.
Wouldn't you get a second opinion? Of course you would.
Try a local garage or truck repair facility (trucks have generators too)

Things that work discontinued?

Hi, my 1986 Onan 6.5 NH didn't have a starter motor; Now it's called Hybrid Technology.

Id get a second opinion. Surely there is a generator/alternator/ starter repair shop close to St Pete where U live. Id bet U could diys . It sounds like the guy is in bad need of a sale. I recently had what I thought was a bad starter on my JD lawntractor. JD wants almost $500 for that starter, Took it to the local shop(not JohnDeere) and found nothing wrong /A bad ground. The bendix repair kit sounds to be the rite price I will try to look that up with one of my suppliers

Here is what I did to solve the problem of being able to work on the generator along side the road if I had to. Took a couple of days to measure and fabricate things but its been extremely handy to be able to slide the drawer out for service and/or removal.

I did check with both of my aftermaket part suppliers and they no longer carry aftermarket parts for ONAN. SORRY

Onan Starter bendix kit

I bought the kit (Part # 191-2187 "Drive Kit Assy.") listed in my earlier email, over the counter from a store in Clearwater Florida that has since moved.
Call PPL RV Parts at 800-755-4775 and ask them. I can't beleive I got the last one in existance.
Keep looking.
