My water pump only runs until pressure reaches a certain point. So if no water is running in the trailer, the pump turns itself off. Turn the shower on, or flush the toilet, and the pump runs until a few moments after the water is shut off. A little may backflow to the white tank, because the pump will cycle on and off periodically.

Your pump may be working fine.

Today is a gift, that's why they call it the present.

A lot of these pumps are designed to run dry with out self destructing. Check the manual or look up your pump at Water Pumps & Filtration Systems, Fluid Handling Equipment for RV, Marine & Industries SHURflo Fluid Delivery Solutions
