Dash AC fan switch

Hi, our 2005 landyacht fan works on all but the high setting for the dash a/C. Any suggestions for trouble shooting?
Any suggestions where to buy a new fan speed switch?
Workhorse said no longer made.... Heading south, help please
Thanks.

It is a GM Harrison designed system I believe. The high position on some of the GM systems actually took the output from the alternator directly (highest voltage) to run and that was done with a relay.

So, without looking directly at a schematic of the way the high speed was designed on your unit I don't know, but it is possible that the switch is fine, but there is a relay which is bad. I know this high speed fan relay issue was a common problem on GMC motorhomes of the '70s era, and the Harrison AC designs didn't change a lot for many years.

So, it might be tricky to figure out.

Check for a fuse near the a/c just to the left of the radiator in the front, mine burned the fuse holder, replaced with a circuit breaker.

Indeed, the high fan setting uses a separate power wire with a separate fuse, sometimes in the fuse box, and sometimes elsewhere.

It may use an integrated resistor also. If so it will be in the ductwork, typically accessible from the passenger side under dash.

On this year of GM vehicles, the wires going into the resistor are subject to failure at or near the plug.

It is advised that the plug be replaced with an updated model.

Thanks and more questions please

Thanks for the info, I will check those tomorrow.
Is there an actual schematic for the coach? Where to get one? Trouble shooting so much easier with.
Does anyone drive and run the genset and the rooftop a/C while driving in really hot weather ? Any issues doing this?
Also, does anyone run the fridge while driving? Any issues with that, on ac or lpg? If not, how to keep the ice cream from melting during long drive?

Thanks for the help, these are awesome motorhomes

We have never run the gen. while driving. Our dash air (& heat) keep the coach comfortable….at least in the cab area.
And, we always run with the fridge set on auto…running on LPG.

Thanks for the fridge tip! Still chasing the a/c fan, took dash apart for fan access, found Bosch relay mounted above radiator on driver side and since no one can find a wiring diagram, am hand following the wires. I will post pics when I am done if anyone else has this problem.

High speed a/c fan issue solved 2005 Silverado diagram works

Used a 2005 3/4 ton wiring diagram, and after finding the high setting relay under the hood high up on the drivers side, found the relay plug was bad. The resistors are only used for the low speed settings and are unrelated to the separate high speed circuit. If anyone is interested, I will post the disassembled dash, relay location and circuit diagram photos.

Still interested if ly can run Onan while driving.

Thanks for the input and help......

No issues with running the genset while running. I do it all the time since I have no working dash air.

Always post picks of component locations. You never know when someone in the future will be looking for just that pic.

Glad to hear it's possible and no drama having the engine alternator and the converter charging at the same time. Thanks!

Hi I have the same yr and model. I have 3 speeds on my dash fan switch. But 4 positions. Someone said that the fan was only a 3 speed. are you saying that you now have 4 speeds?? If you do, I am most interested in your fix.
As far as driving with the genny running, we sometimes do it as well to get the roof a/c to run. As far as running the frig on propane, you take your chances if involved in an accident. Will run the frig on occasion if frig is warming up but usually find that the temp will hold till 4 pm when we can hook up to electricity.

How much is included in the 2005 3/4 ton wiring diagrams? where did you get them?
Thanks

On some very hot days I will turn the front roof a/c on medium and start the gen set when I need extra cooling, run it until it is comfortable. Since we don't boondock I have to run the gen set periodically for exercise and this way it is actually useful.

I usually keep the fridge running too. It probably switches to ac when the gen is on, I've never gone back to look, but Vinnie commented that one minute of open fridge is one hour recovery with these units so I want to keep everything nice and cold.

I have 4 speeds but have temp control issues so may need to replace some components in that area. If I have dash air flowing without the compressor sometimes it is quite warm: the water valve may be staying open, not urgent enough to investigate yet.

White vacuum hoses...

After finding the relay and bad fuse, still chasing max a/c, discovered the white vacuum hose was powder.... Need to take out the center dashboard locker again, so the flap will close correctly.... This might be the end of the issue, maybe......

I found vacuum hose that runs from switch under the dash to the outside of the a/c under the hood, was disconnected with a 12 inch piece missing. found two 6 inch pieces on the motor where rodent had started nest building. When reconnected it still wouldn't close flap, with tv out I could trace the vacuum hose behind the dash, found tooth hole in the middle of the run by running finger down the tube.
Suggest you pull the 5 tubes off switch and somehow pressure or vacuum check each one.

Wow, thanks for the tip, off to parts store for hose. Just sucked on the white vacuum hose and flap will close correctly. Got to get this working.

Just got home w/ a 98 no 4th speed, no dash air no air flow from 2 upper vents. Found the 4th speed wire connector broken off battery, recharged a/c, took out tv & took apart hose lines to venting. A critter (pack rat) clogged the heater distribution box & 2lines with nuts. Caught him on a glue board, sucked out all lines & box, problem solved.

Thanks to all the input from everyone I now have 4 speeds working on the dash a/c,heater fan switch. The problem that I found with the high speed setting was in the wiring from the battery into the inline fuse. I could move it around and the fan would start and stop. Will replace within the next day or so.
But the 20 amp fuse in this inline fuse holder gets extremly hot. any comments??

For all those who have or are attempting to replace that little white vacuum hose, have you found a place to buy it?? If so where??
Cannot find one that small.

Hose source

Yes, now that mine is working, yipee.... 7/64" hose, available at carquest, 55 cents a foot, 9 feet did mine, goes right on the vacuum motor and fits right over the white vacuum hose, routed away from the hot radiator. I also had to replace the vacuum /switch unit as mine would not blow out and work.
Hot fuse means bad connection, I replaced my fuse holder and fuse, 30 amp, as per the dwg, got a marine style one, waterproof, at west marine.
Cold air, 51 degrees at the Vents as per my ir thermometer and smiling right seater, this was so worth it, even the puppy stopped panting....
