Cummins B5.9L 230 HP Turbo Diesel w/Allison MD-3060 6-speed transmission
Hi I recently purchase a 1995 35’ land yacht wide body pusher. I am missing some type of overflow plug on the housing between the Cummins Diesel engine and the Allison transmission. I believe it is the torque converter cover.
It’s a large treaded bolt whole right on the bottom of this housing less than 1". Does anyone know what this is, my oil levels are all good (trans and Diesel) that’s why I think it’s an overflow of some type.
I could easily be wrong, no experience with your combination. But the Cummins 5.9L used in Dodge applications has 2 holes in the engine to transmission adaptor housing below the turbo one is used for access to the torque convertor bolts and the other allows you to insert a BARRING tool into the housing that allows the engine to be turned over using the tool for valve adjustments and timing work and any other reason to slowly rotate the engine for service.
ENGINE OFF! Look into the hole and see if you feel the flexplate and try to rotate the engine by hand and see if a bolt appears. If you feel the ring gear, then I'd bet it's the BARRING tool hole.

Thanks GC, i took another look and it appears to be part of the Cummins Diesel housing - because of the color (paint). I still believe it's the shroud over the Torque converter. I also attached a photo which may help.
Most all mid-range and heavy-duty diesel engines have the same type of hole in the flywheel housing. The hole is never plugged, it can be used on many engines to bar over the engine by using a screw driver through the hole by prying on the flywheel ring gear teeth. As mentioned before it can be used to tell when your rear crankshaft seal is leaking and the transmission input seal also.
