Atwood Analog Thermostat Replacement

Hi Folks,

Has anyone had success replacing the original equipment Atwood analog wall thermostat with a digital one. Nothing fancy, just on/off and an LCD temperature adjustment & display.

Sure would appreciate recommendations and possible pitfalls with this change.

Best regards and safe travel to all...

Randy, Pam & 🐕

Haven't done it myself, but I see no reason it wouldn't work. There’s nothing particularly special about the Atwood thermostats. Just a simple ON/OFF switch and a normally open switch based on temperature.

Yes, I replaced mine with a digital model that several on this forum used. I had to hunt for it. Found it at Walmart - Hunter Just Right 4299B. It is certainly not fancy or programmable. Just makes it all digital.

As long as it has a battery in it, any digital thermostat will work fine. The battery powers the electronics and the relay which turns the furnace on. The digital ones without a battery use 24 volts AC from a home heating system to power them, and will not work with the 12 volt DC of the trailer furnace.

I have replaced the original Furnace Thermostat with the Hunter too...
Before..

I bought both of mine off used, Ebay for under $12 each inc shipping..

Mounted and working.

Took me about 5 minutes.

Biggest issue I had was that both of my trigger wires from the furnace were the same color... but I am told it makes no difference... it just completes the circuit.

I love being able to see the ambient temperature too!

The batteries have been in a year now, without issues.
Great write-up here:

Does this digital thermostat have an on/off switch?

The "Fan" switch closest to the display is set in the middle position and its Off.

Well, I picked up a Hunter today at Walmart and will do the install in a day or so. Only thing I noticed, although it looks identical to all posted photos, it carries a model #42995; don't know if that means something....

Anyway, as usual, thank you for all the input from Forum members; your ongoing help is invaluable.

Best regards and safe travel to all,

Did the quick install today... works GREAT! Can't believe I waited this long to make the switch to digital.

Note to self: Try to be smarter next time.....

Any issue with these starting up at temps below 32degrees? That is, if you haven't been in your trailer and it is less than 32 degrees at start up?
