I'm looking at a 96 LYWB 35' 20K miles, that has been sitting for 8 years. It is covered in tree sap, and mold, and the inside is pretty dirty also. I'm going to change fluids, filters, fuel, and try to crank it this week, so keep your fingers crossed.

So it must be a diesel. Hopefully she clean up nice for you and fire right up. Sounds like you have a nice project ahead of you, and welcome to the Forum. Pictures would be appreciated.

Yes it is a Cummins/Allison, and I'm just hoping that there are no major problems. I will definitely get some pics before I start this project. Looks like I'll be busy for a while, and a good thing I just retired.

The sticker on the dash says Freightliner, but the vin printout says Oshkosh, so it must have been when they were merging. The RV is next door, and as soon as it warms up I'm going to start checking things out. Do I have to raise the bed to check the antifreeze, and oil, or does it have a door in the back. I've also got to unplug the grid heater, and IP solenoid before cranking to get some oil pressure up without starting. Thanks again for any tips. I will take pics when I start on it, but if you saw them now you would say to run away.

Gary,
One of the first thing to look at and give attention too are leaks. The roof and around all windows. Water damage are a major repair cost on these fiberglas body MH's due to delamination, so look for any signs of water infiltration, even small visible spots can lead to major unseen problems. It may be hard to see side wall lamination issues if the coach is as dirty as say, but look down the side for any bulges and push on any areas that look suspicious for sponginess. If this unit has a major problem with water leaks you may want to find a more sound coach to start with.

Well, I just checked it out, and there is alot of delamination along the driver side. It looks like I need to pass on this one due the cost of repairing. I know when it delaminates, it means the wood holding the glue has rotted or is wet. Man what a bummer, I was getting excited about this project.

That just means you lower the price offered!

If the structure is aluminium, the delam could be repaired with some considerable investment in time and $$$$$$$. Depends how much of both you have. But, as suggested, you may be better looking for the soundest example you can find, for the price, to start any project like this.

They only want 5K for it, but the delamined areas would be full of wet molded wood. You could part it out, but thats alot of work too. I would really like to have the 6.5 LP Onan generator, or the Allison tranny for my Dodge.

I paid $2K for my 36' 92 LY. It had delamination on the driver's side as well. I spent just under $400 in materials to replace the delaminated areas (Everything from driver's seat to the fridge and the driver's side wall in the bedroom) from the inside out. The time investment was in the range of months but it is do able if you have the skills and the patients. I would have considered mine as on the verge of no return. Mold issues were actually minimal. Removing the carpet was pretty much required though. Check for moldy smells. Mine smelled musty but once the carpet was removed the smells went away. If she runs then I'd offer $3k and see what they say.

Gary, didn't mean to discourage you in your purchase. Just wanted you to be aware of a possible problem that is expensive and difficult it fix. For the price if the leaks and delamination aren't to major, and you have the time and ability it may be what your looking for.

Now the 99 year old lady told her son she wants it to go with her estate, so in the meantime its sitting there rotting away. I even offered to cover it to prevent further damage, but they just don't care. Might as well close this thread because it's not going to happen.
