2002 Land Yacht Breaks

Took a 2002 Land Yacht 30 for a test drive Saturday, clean and appears to be great condition. The only thing that concerns me are the breaks. I've driven a number of medium duty trucks and none of them took the kind of leg force it took to stop this rig. I would be hesitant to let my wife drive if this is normal. The owner say's its has always been this way.

I assume this unit came with power breaks but am not sure. I couldn't see a break booster under the front hood (or really anything else for that matter) and didn't want to lift the doghouse to check. I should add that this unit only has 21,157 miles on it. I'm very interested in buying but would like to hear from other owners on this.

I assume your AS is on a Chevy chassis. You might search online for the Chevy required maintenance for that year and model. It should give you a list of items to be serviced at different mileage and/or time periods. That's a good place to start because I am sure they have periodic maintenance requirements for your brakes.

Mine is on a Freightliner chassis and I found the rubber bushings and linkage were suppose to be replaced at 10 years no mater what the mileage was. After replacement it drove 100% better and eliminated play in the wheel.

Our '04 Land Yacht 30 had 18,000 on her when we brought her home to PA from NC. The brakes during the first couple hundred miles were exactly how you stated, and I'll even add, "scary"! But she was sitting for near two years, so I believe the rotors were all kinds of dirty. By the time we got her home, brake pressure improved, but it's still not your Dad's Oldsmobile

Has the '02 you're considering been sitting for awhile? Were you able to put 20 - 30 miles or more on her? Are you able to have the rig checked-out by a professional?

Sorry I can't be more helpful.....

Best of luck,
Randy

brakes

I have a 2004 LY 30SO with 44000 miles when i bought it. i would recommend you get your brakes serviced asap. I waited late on my brakes and ended up having to replace the whole assembly in the front. At least take it to a mechanic that understands big truck chassis to get it evaluated.

Our 2005 30SL had a total brake failure last spring returning from Florida. The rear calipers were frozen in place and the brake fluid boiled away causing the petal to go near the floor. We were able to stop but had to be towed for a 2 day replacement of the calipers, the cracked pads and the soft lines to the calipers. The cause I was told was the lack of continued use such as months in storage. I then had the front brakes checked when I was back home and the same problem was repaired and replaced. The Workhorse chassis had recalls for the same issue on earlier chassis models, but not the 2005 P32 chassis like ours. All pads had cracks in the linings due to overheating. If you can smell the overheating after driving, my advise would get them checked out asap.
