Your thoughts on the most desirable

If you had your druthers to choose all over again. What peticular model and configuration of Airstream Classic moho would you choose. Keep in mind that you still have your budget, (or your wife's budget); so while we may desire a 199- Classic 370, our pocket book would maybe cringe thinking about the pain at the pump. If you have a 270, does the extra length of a 310 have you sighing but a 345 is far too long, complicated and uneconomical? Or maybe visca-versa.

I'm just trying to gauge what the most popular size and configuration is as I have run into a number of Airstream Classic moho owners who have lamented that they couldn't find their perfect size or configuration, and settled for the one they bought.

Mine for example is a 310 Turbo diesel with a rear convertible lounge. I like the layout as I have a family and the ability to seat 13 people in the coach is great, but there are people that would like a permanent bedroom and this configuration would be a deal breaker. If anything I would go smaller but would hate to give up the rear lounge and panoramic window for a rear bath.

I know a lot of people would go diesel pusher, but I was trying to keep it as a Classic favorite.

We are real happy with our classic diesel pusher. The rear queen is a bit lacking in space on the sides and end for dressing. Rear twins would be perfect with the space in the center but not possible with engine under the bed.

The rear engine makes a real present ride noise wise.

Economy is better than most at 11 - 13 mpg.

If I had found the unit WXBUOY was able to find, that's what I would want. Same Classic lines, the great Airstream construction, but with a Cummins turbo-diesel. I've driven some pretty LOUD diesels over the years, always had a 'love-affair' with the bolts in the empty coffee can sound.....I know, I'm weird....

In my most recent issue of Car and Driver, they did a comparison test of diesel mid-size SUVs. One of the photographers described the sound of all of them running at once as being like "skeletons wanking in a metal filing cabinet." I've always liked that sound, diesels fed and clothed us and put a roof over our heads when I was growing up, my dad was a diesel mechanic.

We looked long and hard for our 345...using the 27' Overlander('68). My wife has mobility issues, and stopping to avail the facilities was a real pain. With the 345, it was pull over, avail, and pull back out. Disconnecting a toad is so much easier than a trailer. We wanted twin beds, as the Overlander had them(though in the middle), and the rear twins are great. I was surprised to find out that when I parked them together to transfer personal items, the 345 filled up faster than the Overlander emptied. Yeah, moot point when the beds and shower are holding areas...
I like the extra window, the middle, split bathroom, and the curbside kitchen view. I do wish we had all-around awnings, and they're on THAT list. I would also like a spare 345 for parts, but it's on that list after THAT list the awnings are on...

I like the 280 as it a good size for fitting just about any place we want to go. I have to have a diesel just because. I could live with a 310 but no way do I want anything with a tag axle, too much extra hardware. The thing I really wish I had was a rear bedroom with the center bath. Several options for bedding set up is great. The rear bath with the tanks hanging under the bumper are just way to vulnerable. I have many scrapes on the bottom of my tanks and I have broken and or knocked off the cap on the dump valve more than once. With the center bath the weight distribution is much better and the plumbing is centralized in a small area of the coach. Also the center bath lends itself to more privacy if there are kids or another couple up front. Whoever might be up front has to argue with Hager for the couch/bed.

Well, I will weigh in while all is working. I had found my "dream" Classic 250, but ended up due to a number of reasons (budget being one) passing and purchasing a 1991 300LE which while 30' is a bit longer than I had hoped for, the layout is better in the bedroom and you quickly get use to it, so the extra 5' hasn't been a problem. The layout of my unit and the 250 I are similar. The 250 had a small dinette, while the 300 has two swivel "barrel" chairs and a fold down table which offers more flexibility. My 300 LE, has the "carpeted" ceiling which makes if very quiet and the cabinets are really nice. Our unit has 2 twin beds in the back, and while a double bed was what I originally wanted, the ability to walk to the back and have greater floor space is better for long trips. We camped for 1.5 months in it this winter and had no problem. The original owners replaced the oven with a microwave/convention oven, and my wife had gotten use to it now. So, we're happy and polishing away! Jim

We are making our way back from Michigan to Colorado. Our semicircle route is traveling CCW around a strong low pressure. Nice tailwind as we headed north to the mackinaw bridge then west on 2. 55 mph 1700 rpms, 1 lb of boost, and 650 degrees EGT. Dead silent up front except for some tunes. 14 mpg on this tank. Nice cool day of driving even though its been foggy and is now raining. We are enjoying a quiet rainy evening plugged in at Indian Lake just north of Manistique.
