That 'gizmo', the Vari-flow is an alcohol/water injector system sold back in the late 70's-early 80's by an outfit called: 'Geraghty mpg performance products'. If you search them, you'll find several old Popular Mechanics Mags that mention the vari-flow and another 'anti-ping' device they marketed...

The hose going into the solenoid probably comes from a reservoir someplace to mix the fluid with the fuel coming from the tank - probably inside the 'black box'....???

It's guess it's inop at this stage, and I'd sure clean up the piping from the fuel tank to the carb and get rid of that 'black box'... You don't want any fuel line leaks down there!

What is this I found in my Airstream?

I don't know how much the installation of the 'Geraghty mpg performance products' Vari-flow differed between automotive and motorhome installs, but I had one installed on my '65 Dodge tow vehicle in 1980. Since the Dodge didn't have a water tank, the installation included a 1 gallon reservior that was mounted under the hood in which the water and alcohol was mixed . . . . then the metering device pumped the mixture to a spray jet that was mounted to the air cleaner housing immediately above the primary bores of the carburetor. The idea was to decrease detonation when running a high compression motor on the lower-grade non-leaded fuels. It never really made a huge difference on my Dodge and I ended up with valve recision . . . had hardened valve seats machined into the head for a permanent solution and now run the engine on premium no-lead and just have to watch my accelerator use on grades or when passing to limit detonation problems.
