Steve, can you tell me what gauge wire that Amp meter may need? Can i just feed into the ignition 12v circuit or do I need some dedicated heavier gauge wire running directly to the alt ( or center post of isolator)?

found this:
In general, an ammeter needs to be installed between the device providing electricity and the device(s) using electricity. This kind of connection, where you break the wire and install the meter across the break, is called a "series" connection. In an automobile, the ammeter should be installed in the smaller of the two positive (usually red) battery cables, the one that runs from the positive battery terminal to the alternator charging terminal (and also to rest of the non-starter electrical loads). Here is a simple drawing: B+ ------(\)---------- A+ ---------- ACC

ST Where: (\) = The Ammeter
B+ = Positive Battery Terminal
A+ = Alternator Charging Terminal
ST = Starter (large cable)
ACC = To vehicle Accessories (small cable) i.e., ignition, lights, etc.
------ = smaller (typically 10 gauge) red wire
= larger battery/starter cable (typically 4 gauge or larger) Notes:
  • Do not install the ammeter in the large cable that goes to the starter.
  • The small cable from the Alternator to the battery may be attached to the battery terminal, or it may be attached to the starter terminal. Electrically these are equivalent.
  • In order for the ammeter to properly show whether the battery is charging or discharging, the ammeter must be installed between (a) the battery and (b) both the alternator and fuse block/ignition switch.
  • If the accessory cable is also attached to the starter, it will have to be removed and attached to the alternator side of the ammeter or to the alternator as shown in the drawing.
  • Make sure you disconnect the negative battery terminal before working on the electrical system. ALWAYS wear safety googles whenever working on or near the vehicle battery.

Peter,

Where are you planning on installing the 100 amp ammeter? That's a fairly large ammeter so depending on what you're wanting to monitor it may be overkill.

Here's a chart for figuring what size wire to use.

The large wire only needs to be on the feed side of the gauge, i.e. from the battery to the gauge. The wires on other side should just be the standard size to each device.

I have a Teleflex 60 amp ammeter that I plan on installing in the coach charging circuit.

Thanks for the info, Brad.
The ammeter came with the deal and I created 3 slots (1 for trans temp, 1 for coach battery voltmeter and 1 for ammeter)
If nothing else, it will just looking freaking awesome all lit up (trying to live up to Deans's cockpit look )

Following Martins lead I've decided to switch to a cassette style of toilet so I bought the Thetford C403 toilet and the Caontessa C400 basin.

When you guys talk "EFI", I don't know if it's Electronic Fuel Injection or Every F@#$!ng Instrument.

As for me I'm waiting until the F35 is declared a dud and I'll be able to buy the helmet that has a HUD and can see through the Airstream without turning my head. That way I won't have to depend on the DW, whose hands get further apart as I'm backing up.

Where are you all getting these sweet Teleflex instruments????

Cheers
Tony

Depending on the context it could be either one!

Now a HUD would definitely be nice. However I think the F35 will be around a lot longer than I will be.

whilst we are talking Teleflex gauges and if you have the newer dashboard (late 83 and up) and you can't seem to ever get the gauges clean looking, here is a 15 minute gauge cleaning tutorial:
1. Remove the screws (6 or so) holding the instrument panel in place.
2. carefully pull it away from the dash at the top until it hits your steering wheel or shifter
3. use a 3" piece wood or whatever to keep it there.
4. unscrew 3 10mm nuts and carefully remove them along with the washer
(if you drop them you will hate yourself)
5. Carefully move bracket piece holding all the gauges forward enough to be able to stick a rag in there soaked in windex.
6. Put it all back together and just be in awe.

3 Point Seatbelts

After my car crash 3 years ago, I've decided that 3 point seatbelts are a necessity. Don't think my chest can survive contact with the steering wheel at speed, especially after sternum being broken from car accident.

Work has placed me in a WorkHorse '2-ton' vehicle, which has aluminum interior walls. There is a jump-seat on curbside with a 3 point seatbelt. Looking at the seatbelt installation on work vehicle, I've determined that with proper plates at the installation of the upper mount, at least I'll have some semblence of a 3 point seatbelt.

Found seatbelts online, took photos of jump-seat installation on WorkHorse for my installation. Of course, interior wall is substantially thicker than what we have, will go with thicker installation plate.

Will post pix when installed.

Thanks, Derek

Derek,

I looked at the possibility of 3-point seat belts a couple of years ago and came to the conclusion that it is possible to add them but not in the way you re thinking. I don't have access to my pictures at the moment but tomorrow morning I'll post the pictures and my thoughts on the subject.

Oh yeah, I've already had some parts fabrication work done and some hardware purchased.

Brad
