Water pump replacement

I want to replace my water pump on my 1991 250 Classic.

According to my VIN lookup on the AC Delco site, I have two options:

$117 ACDelco 251-612 GM Original Equipment Water Pump with Gasket
$50 ACDelco 252-608 Professional Water Pump with Housing

My sense is to get the cheaper professional water pump, given that it is 'professional' and seventy bucks cheaper.

Can anyone tell me if I am missing something here? Why is the better product so much cheaper?

I replaced my fan clutch about five years ago, should I bother replacing that as well? It seems to work fine. It was a AC Delco heavy duty one.

Thanks all for your help!

all the best

Nick

Adjectives are a cheap way to make up for shortcomings.

If there is that much difference in the price of 2 water pumps there is that much difference in the 2 pumps. The difference may be in the rated flow rate or just the quality of the pump. Buy the one with the higher flow rating.

I believe this is the Isuzu part number.

113650017-60968

That was in my notes so I’m not super confident in its accuracy but try it and see what you get.

Thank you Mayco! I think you have me pointed in the right direction. Is your motor a 6BG1 or a 6BD1?

Could be lots of differences...

-Rebuilt vs. new
-Import vs US made
-Heavy duty bearings vs regular
-Flow rate
etc, etc.

You'd be best to try and find the specs on the two before choosing. There are often reasons to go with the more expensive option, but sometimes it's expensive just 'because' with no real difference.

I had a similar experience replacing an idler pulley on my 1999 Suburban...in the end the cheaper one (that looked identical) had much lighter duty bearings on it and made the decision easy.
