US Gear Overdrive Wiring Diagram
I purchased a US Gear OD unit about 18 months ago. Had it installed by my local truck repair place. It worked fine at first. Now it will not shift. I've looked all through the paper work all I can fine is the mechanical installation. No wiring diagram. If any of you have a US Gear unit any chance you have might the wiring diagram??? It's running fine in 1:1 but I can't shift it into overdrive. The yellow led is lite up, but when you press the shift button nothing happens. I'm not even sure where the shift module is or what it looks like. I've got to believe it's an electrical problem, and not the unit it self. Their web site says they are out of business and no parts or support.
DualRange Overdrive
Thanks in advance.

We have a U.S. Gear O.D. and other than replacing the module years ago, have had no problems. Find the circuit breaker on the firewall or stuffed under the dash. There will be a manual re-set on the breaker. I have the diagrams, but why did you not get them? Was it a new or used unit? Did it make a "clunk" (normal) when shifting? How long did it work before it quit? Your installer is going to void warranty since you bought it, or did he? I've heard of big problems with the unit if it's shifted in park or neutral or when the cruise control is on.

Good News Bad News
After looking through some more paperwork I found the installation instructions for the wiring. It just shows how to hook up the shift switch, control module and connections to the OD unit. I'd really like a wiring diagram showing how it works. I'm guessing that the two switches on the OD unit are the limit switches for the ball screw. And they tell the module when the ball screw has gotten to end of travel.
As US Gear is out of business, there is no worrying about the warrantee, there isn't any
.
The unit worked fine on a trip 5 weeks ago on the way to the campground. Shifted with the usual clunk. Then on the way back it didn't want to shift. It was in OD when I put it away. I moved it down to the shop and drove it down the drive and I was able to shift it back to normal. Took it 2 weeks later on a trip and couldn't get it to shift at all
.
Now after looking at the wiring instructions, I see there is both a switched +12 and a direct +12 to the battery through the CB. The led on the shift switch is lighting up. I put the Airstream in the shop for the winter. I'll check the CB and see if that might be the issue.
Any trouble shooting tips would be most grateful.
Thanks
Gary

I'll pull out my files,it seems like there is a in-line fuse as well as the circuit breaker. I'll copy the schematics I have and PM them to you.

Our GV has a floor switch, like an old bright/dim headlight switch on the left of the...well...bright/dim switch...took me a bit of a learning curve to wonder why GV would engage and why the brights wouldn't...m

US Gear OD Module FIX
I worked on mine today and have it fixed.
Some background first. The black box(Electronic Control Module) puts power to the motor for 1.6 sec, each time you press the button. What the trouble shooting instructions do not tell you, is it reverses the polarity to the motor each time you press the button. That makes the motor turn the ball screw in one direction with the first press of the button, then the other direction on the next press. So you go from low to high, to low, to high, each time you press the button.
How I figured it out was I put a test meter from the plug after taking out the module and went from the Brown wire to ground, it's open, did the same for the white wire also open. The went across the Brown & White wires got continuity. So then put +12 to the Brown and ground to the White, motor ran, then reversed the +12 to White and ground to Brown and the motor ran the other way. Then designed the circuit and built it up. Note I jacked up one rear wheel so there was no load on the drive shaft, blocked the other wheel and put the tranny in neutral with the emergency brake off.
I built a 2 relay control with a center off SPDT spring loaded toggle switch. I mounted it on a bracket I made over the unit on the shift lever. The bracket has a cut out so you can still see the High/Low Leds. Now you push the toggle switch up and it runs the motor to the HIGH side, press it down and it runs to the low side. You have to hold the switch for at lease the 1.6 seconds to get the ball screw all the way to the end of travel. There is an over running clutch on the motor so you can't hurt anything if you hold the switch on too long. Took the coach out for a run and it works perfect!!!!!!

Wow! I have no idea what you're talking about; that o.d should shift right now without moving your foot off the pedal. "1.6 seconds" is too long.

Do a search, I posted the schematic a while ago. After checking the fuses (the failure of the fuses was usually someone trying to shift the o.d. while parked). The only things I could think of, after checking the fuses, would be the control module and the shifter. Odd there was no after-market company (maybe there is) that took over the manufacturing. That was a fine o.d., mine's worked fine, but I know how to shift it. Let me know if you can't find my schematic.

I am not sure about US Gear but my Gear Vendor had a speedometer adapter inline with the truck speedometer cable. That unit generated a voltage and without that voltage the control unit would not allow shifting. Check the cable just off the transmission and see if the is a small 2 in. round generator inserted in the cable. If there is one there it may be a Ford part, that is what Gear Vendor used.
Also Gear Vendor used a Volvo overdrive gear box and just made the tail shaft adapter for different model cars. If US did the same Volvo may have information.

U.S. Gear O/U Drive
Hello fellow Streamers. I also have a U.S. Gear overdrive and it still works fine. It would be nice is whoever has a wiring schematic to post it on the forum for those who dont have it. I know I don't have it. I know that U.S. Gear was the last manufacturer after they took over manufacturing the units from Doug Nash Engineering.
I always keep my unit in the od position as that is where i get the best performance and I disconnect the electrical connector under the hood when Intake the truck in for service, just in case someone get curious as to what the shifter switch does.
One thing I di remember is that you should be under 35MPH to shift and before you press the button to shift, take your foot off the gas, press button, wait for the clung that tells you it shifted and then you can procede as usual.
A wiring schematic sure would be handy!
