Totally FUBARed

I knew it was dicey if a RV place would allow my LP tank to pass inspection after the Ontario government clamped down on LP tanks and certification after the Sunrise Propane debacle.
While it is not necessary to certify the ASME tanks we have in our MH's as they are built stronger than a portable tank, they still have to be inspected by a licensed RV1 tech. If the RV1 tech decides that the rust pits are deeper than 40 thou, they will not service the unit or issue you an inspection steeeker.........No steeeker, no fuel.

Since the RV garage and tech's license is on the line if something should happen up to 6 months down the road, they are failing everything and demanding people get new tanks....PERIOD. You know where this is going. Wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that the bloody people who inspect also SELL the bloody things.

I took my 310 into get the propane system checked as it does have a leak and needs a new regulator, fill valve and blow off valve for the tank. I entered the office and talked to the service writer who asked the year of the vehicle........I stated 1983.....without hesitation his head snapped up and stated categorically that I needed a new tank. I was shocked....did he not want to at least see the bloody thing first before he bent me over the bloody desk and had his way with me. Not even a feakin for foreplay.

I demanded he inspect the tank first......He sent a tech out who didn't even bend down to look through the access panel......Yeh, you need a new tank.
FINE, I need a new tank....except I can't find one......

Does anyone know who sells a replacement tank 14" diameter by 60" in length?????.

You are so lucky to deal with such a customer oriented company. Check out the fun I had with my tank. http://www.airforums.com/forums/f311/moho-propane-valve-replacement-102178.html

I would recommend that you pull the tank, it's really pretty easy, and take it to a propane supply and have them inspect, replace the valves as needed and paint and certify it for you. If that certificate isn't enough then find another RV outfit and show them your pretty, newly pained tank.

I think the tank I pulled from the 345 is the size you're looking for.

Thanks guys for replying.....

Brad I don't know what condition your tank is in, but if it has any rust at all I'm back to square 1......they will fail it. Send me pics to compare to my own, please. I may use the pics to show the tech.

My tank is in great shape for a 30 year old tank (in better shape than me at 30+)...... a little surface rust in places but overall very serviceable. You can't sand blast, only hand sand. If I drop the tank and repaint it, nobody will inspect it at all.
I'm going to go to another shop tomorrow to see if they will be a bit more gentle with me. If I can get it passed I will drop the tank and epoxy paint it to protect it, but I need it to pass BEFORE I touch it.

I will try and post pics of the tank tomorrow.

This sounds worrying and expensive. Is it just Ontario or is this a Canada wide thing? I`ve never had a gas station even look for a certificate or a date on a motorhome tank....

Tony I don't know all the rules in Ontario but I would avoid RV repair shops. Find a propane supply, the outfits that install and service/fill home and industrial tanks. They should be able to inspect, refurbish and certify your tank or send you to somebody who can. An RV tech can do little more than look at your tank and maybe screw in a new valve and check and adjust the regulator.

By the way Brads tank is the same as mine so it should fit your coach. The problem is it is still 30 years old and if the guy's mind is already made up it won't do you much good.

Tony,

Here are some pictures of the propane tank from the 345. You'll notice that it was sprayed with undercoating at some point in it's life. If I was to guess the undercoating has been on since the motorhome was delivered to the owner.

I've actually been considering keeping it as a fuel tank for the 15kw house generator that I have sitting in the shop.

Call around to the other propane dealers. There are 2 things I have found out here in Mississippi, 1) all of the dealers in the big towns that i have called will tell you that "nobody will certify tanks due to liability" and 2) All of the small town dealers will gladly certify and refill if the manager is around when you call.
