The ultimate compliment.
Met some German tourists today that had never seen an AS mo/ho. Turned out, they were both Industrial Designers and figured the only person who could have designed our coaches was Raymond Loewy. I don't know who the actual designer was, but, if he/she checks into the forum, this one's for you.

"Airstream is a brand of luxury recreational vehicle manufactured in Jackson Center, Ohio, USA. It is currently a division of Thor Industries. The company, which now employs fewer than 400, is the oldest in the industry. Airstream trailers are easily recognized for their distinctive rounded aluminum bodies, which originated in the 1930s from designs created by Hawley Bowlus. Bowlus was the chief designer of Charles Lindbergh's aircraft, the Spirit of St. Louis."

I always admired the 1953 model but they messed it up in later years. I never owned one, but wish I had. I graduated grammar school in 1953 and I was a bit too young.

Grew up with a bunch of Stude's Dad loved the 53, thought they were the best looking car ever!!! But 'yer right they sure messed up the original design.
Turned into the Avanti after all.

This will make you sad...
Griener's Junk yard just outside Poland N.Y. ca. 1976.
It's still there. I recently took some more photos just to see how much it has changed..couldn't find the Stude though.

Could be, 55/57?, classic time in automobile design for everyone except Ford. Looks like a couple of nice pick-ups back there, too.

When I posted that comment, I realized I'd stepped into hot water, sorry. What I SHOULD have said, was I had a '57 Ford post when in high school, and the guys with the 55/57 Chevs got all the chicks.

Hard to tell from the direct side view, but I think it's a 53 or 54. They haven't screwed up the front yet like they did in 55 and up. The best way to date the 50's Studebakers is by the front. In 55 they moved the grill to the center and added a hood ornament. In the 56 up ones they had prominent grill and a little fake hood scoop.
My dad had a 53 Studebaker hardtop (no pillar). It was a very nice car.
BTW, that rectangular door in the fender between the wheel and the door is one of the vents. They opened directly into the interior in the kick panel with a piece of large screen. You could look out the vents and see the road going by.

I remember my Mom complaining about the problems she'd had with her Mustang and saying, "your Grandfather never had car problems". I had to remind her: "Mom, Grandpa drove Studebakers all his life and the dealer always made sure he got a "Wednesday" car."

There were still a few vestigages of the Lowey design in the Lark. The Starlight Coupes were wonderful cars, but the Studebaker that followed me home is a 1960 Lark VIII Regal Deluxe Convertible. It is in need of total restoration, but I have acquired most of the necessary NOS parts over the past decade to make the restoration possible. Hopefully, one day before too very long, it will again look like its twin in magazine advertisements . . . . .
As advertised in 1960 . . . .
