The Classic Airstream Motorhome Parts Thread!

Everyone is in the same boat...
We have a Chassis built by one company, topped by bodywork made by another. Add to that, multiple system and sub-system components from various other companies and suppliers!

This thread will attempt to answer questions and act as a master reference guide to Classic Motorhome owners.

In post #1, we will try to build and keep up to date a library of:
1/ Part numbers and part number cross references.
2/ Parts that can be substituted, or what they originally came from.
3/ Suppliers and approximate costs.

The vast majority of these Classic Motorhomes were built on the GM forward control P30 Chassis is various lengths, but the Spartan Pusher chassis will have a section too.
I am sure we will get into the earlier and later motor homes too!

Not sure what will work best as a layout yet... I think it will be in flux for a while!

Lets try to stay on topic, and post what you know, or used, or find out and we will try to keep post #1 updated.

Please note, this list is a guide, so please confirm with your supplier, as there are some variables in play!

Steve where did you find the GM Code JF9 for the brakes? I'm not doubting you just have never been able to locate any I.D. plate other than the VIN.

Thanks, Dan

Hi Dan!
Well, it was kinda luck...
When I was researching brake parts for my personal list, I kept seeing these codes next to parts... JD7, JH6, JF9, etc.
I had no clue, but found out these are what GM calls RPO codes, where is their speak for IDing internally what was fitted to each vehicle. It seems that most GM vehicles have a build sheet, and many have it is stuck somewhere... I looked it up.
JF9 is Hydroboosted 4 wheel discs.
No idea where they would have put the RPO build sheet on a MH chassis, cos its normally in the glovebox or under the dash pad..
On my1987 Suburban its stuck to the inside of the glovebox lid.
This is an example..

Here is the full list.

That was really my question, did you actually find a build sheet for your moho?

If you look through the on-line parts vendors like Rock Auto, Parts Geeks, Auto Parts Warehouse and others they show multiple master cylinders and calipers for a P-30 with 4 wheel disc brakes. I would really like to find the build sheet for my moho especially if I'm buying spares. I would hate to buy for example a spare set of calipers only to find out 2 or 3 years from now they were the wrong ones while the moho is on jack stands with brake parts scattered around on the ground.

I guess I have spent too many years in truck shops chasing down parts. It is my experience that buying parts by VIN is better than make, model, and year. I just don't see that option on the on-line suppliers.

Cheers, Dan

I wonder if it's possible to get a build sheet from GM from the VIN?

If so that would be a nice bit of information to have.

No, I did not or have not found a RPO build sheet for the MH.
I looked at all of the places that they put them, and none of them apply to our situation!

I recently called 3 GM Truck dealers to try to get a VESI Emissions sticker for my MH... Waste of time...

The 74 (and probably 75/76) Argosy motorhomes have JB8 brakes, front disk with rear drums.

Also the dash heat/ac controls for the 74 (and probably 75/76) Argosy motorhomes are from 73 Ford Mustangs and possibly other Ford models of that era. I bought a 73 mustang control unit and it is identical to the one in my 74 Argosy except without the paint over spray on it as provided by the previous owner

I agree Brad, with your JB8 findings... I kept coming up with that code when looking.

An issue I am having is how to format this thread...
There are many commonalities, but also differences between model years of the Classics alone...

I was thinking as it developed we would keep parts in their relevant sections, but differentiated by Model Year as info comes available...
For example, Part XXX was used in 1981 thru 1984 models, and part YYY was used in 1985 thru 1989 models... but its not always so clear!
Not sure how to incorporate the Argosy, as the differences are more profound... and also the later MH's, that were also on P30 and other chassis...
There is a LOT of cross pollination!

If we incorporate all Airstream MH's, maybe the thread should go into the General section?
Opinions?

"An issue I am having is how to format this thread..."

I have gotten lazy about formatting stuff like this with the availability of "search" functions. As long as the information is there, you can pull it up. Have to use the right search words though, when I search this thread for "brake", I don't find Brad's post about brakes. Had to search for "brakes" to find it.
