Side vacuum power steps not working!

My 1979/1981 Excella moho has the side steps that retract when the door closes (and pushes a button switch in the door frame), and opens when the button switch gets released when the door opens.
The steps aren't doing their thing anymore, so I got under there and depressed the button switch, which makes the solenoid click and the steps try to move a little (about an inch only, either way), so I think it's the vacuum diaphragm inside the housing that may have a crack in it and leaks vacuum. Would there be any other reason why this system would fail? My buddy said the solenoid sounds like it's clicking and working, and he said the hoses look to be in good enough shape, so he also suspects the canister. How tough is it to find a replacement?

I don't think replacements are available anymore.

Electric steps aren't to difficult to retro-fit and aren't terribly expensive. I found a Kwikee double-step at PPL for under $400 delivered.

If it's the motor, there is a Lincoln window motor which works. You'll find it on the forum. Costs about $35 from memory. If not, check the ground on the steps.

Look for an old GM crusie control vacume diafram they are the same ones used in the steps That wat I replaced mine with on a 79 excella MH

I went on a long trip last week, and it seems that the step actually locks when retracted and extended, but only after a long while. Right now, I can stand on the extended step, and it won't budge. The problem is that it won't close or open with the push button on the door sill. I can hear the solenoid click, but it seems weak.
I'll try to get a replacement for the vacuum diaphragm before looking into the electric one.

Well, the thing has quit so I have it in the shop for a quicky replacement (pun).
Should I get a Kwikee one step or two?

I would recommend the 2 step. That is what I put on our 310. Was a tight fit with the battery tray, but cut a couple of clearance spots on the tray and all is ok. I put in the Kwikee Series 32, part number 903209025. The wife and grand kids like the new steps and you do not have to carry a extra step with you. After the wife took a bad fall of the one step, the Kwikee was a must install. No more problems with the steps not working!!!



I also put a filler in the area above the steps, but did not get a shot of that.

I ordered the vacuum actuator repair kit $22.00, this should work fine for me since the unit is still good, just needs a repair.

Total spent $80.00 to repair my vacuum operated step.
