Sealant for water heater

I will be installing my new water heater later in the week and have a question regarding what type of sealant to use. I've read through some of the old posts and I'm not sure what type to get. I know that silicone based sealants are a big NO. As long as I use a polyurethane based sealant does it matter which brand? I know I need a no-sag type since it will be on a vertical surface. Am I correct in my thinking?

I've looked for the Vulkem and Sikaflex locally and cannot find it (New Orleans area). Many of the posts mentioned Fastenal but when I go to their website, they don't have either product. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Bethany you want to use either a putty tape or even better a butyl tape. Both are available from any RV dealer. The as a secondary seal use Vulkem. Vulkem is no longer used as a brand name.

I used Tempro 636 as well. Fastenal has it. I have had zero leaks around the heater.
