Roof fans

Fan-tastic or Shurflow?

Vent covers- good or bad?
Fan-tastic states not to use them do to limiting air flow and increased noise?

I have one old Fan-tastic fan now, it works but is noisy.

I installed a new Fantastic Fan this summer and love it. Got it from VTS with the gray top.
The thermostat and rain sensor options are a must. We found out just how important the rain sensor can be while camping in the Smoky Mountains this summer. We had a 2 in rain while we were away for the day. Got back and things were nice and dry.

I have had both. I like the Fantastic fans. There is some noise but less than running the AC, and much cooler than a non-powered simple roof vent. I do agree with them that a Maxxair cover would impede air flow. But, the rain sensor takes care of what the Maxxair does anyway.

As mentioned above, the customer service at Fantastic Fans is the best.

Vent covers
Had them, took them off.
Did not see any benifit, and liked more free flow air, with or without the fan running.

Shurflo may be a fine company; but, this one is a no brainer for me.

Fantasic Fans takes care of their customers. This summer, with just a year left under warranty on my Airstream, had a small failure on one fan. Called Fantasic Fan and to my amazement, a human being(and a friendly one at that) answered the phone. She transferred me to another friendly human being to help me. Explained my problem and admitted I wasn't sure if the fan was under warranty or not since my paperwork was back home.

I was told that it really didn't matter because they were going to take care of me either way. The individual sent another small part "just in case" it might have been damaged too.

New parts beat me home from my trip. I just wish this company made cars, washing machines,.............

I use vent covers. It does restrict airflow, but I leave my vents open a little in storage to keep moisture levels down, so I gotta have them. I rarely run the fans on high anyway, except to get that heat out after driving all day with everything closed up.
On medium or low, I don't think there's any less airflow than without covers.

fantastic fan

Their customer service is excellent! I have an '04 Classic and one of the fans failed last year. I called the company and they sent a part for free and gave me instruction on the phone and via e-mail. I was truly amazed that they didn't charge me!!! wolf146

I installed a Maxxfan on my trailer. Not the cover. When open rain can't get in.
I leave mine open when in storage and have never had an issue with water.
Also you can tow the trailer with the vent open.
So far I am as happy with the performance of this unit as compared to the Fantastic Fan in my bedroom.
The rain sensor sometimes causes the FF to close just because of some dew. Then half an hour later it opens. This will repeat all night long. Not so nice.

I ordered 2 Fan-tastic fans with rain sensors. No vent covers at this time.

More roof questions...

I have a new Mach15 sitting in back of truck ready to replace the old Coleman 13.5. Is the gasket enough to seal it or should a caulking be used as well?

I am also going to paint the roof white. Many have mentioned Ceramiflex, but it is not sold in California (rolling my eyes). Home Depot has a product called Henry's 587. Has anyone used it? Any other suggestions?

Should I replace the stripped gear in the old antenna or just replace the antenna?

And while I'm up there, I'm going to just pretend the dent in the rear cap is not there (at least it can't be seen from street level).

I just installed the second MaxxFan on the Hagarstream yesterday. I put the first one in to see how I liked it. It worked great but you still need a second opening for the air to come in or go out. A few days or nights in the rain with the vents open and circulating air makes it all worthwhile. Being shut in the coach with two people and a large dog and no ventilation is not fun.

Cheers, Dan
