Rear Camera

Hi,
With my '89 345LE, I've got a black and white viewing screen, and a MONSTROUS camera above the back window. Has anyone replaced their camera with something smaller, as well as making it possible to have a color monitor inside?
Thanks, Derek

Derek,
We haven't, yet, but may have to, soon...ours quit on us last year when we were having electrical issues, and I have tried in my limited way to track down the problem...didn't realize how much I used it till I lost it...will follow this post to see what you have found...thanks for starting it...mike

Mine either didnt have one or the camera was replaced...
I wish I had the Original Housing to go over the new camera... Its bulky, but looks right. I think I will fab something to mimic it.
The B/W monitor is a bit of an eyesore on the dash in these days of LCD's, but as Mike says, its near imposible to do without... my Camer has IR and a Mic too... which freaked me out the first time I heard something from back there.

My camera was 'standard' on my 89 345LE. As well, Steve (Keyair), my moho has the display mounted to the overhead cabinet. Will get outside to get a couple of pix of outside housing and the inside unit, and load them here soon.
Thanks, Derek

Ok, here's the outside views of rearview camera, and the inside screen set-up. Had someone 'adjust' my inside screen, to the point I can't get it back. Wish I had known he was 'adjusting' it, I would've SLAPPED his hand away, lol.
Thanks, Derek

Yep I had one like this. It came from a man from Canada. He said he imported them. Well it worked for about a month or so.

i have looked into this

There is good and bad news about our back up cameras. The bad news is these cameras have an important part that has not been made in many years. A Videocon tube. We all remember the tubes we had in our TV’s? These Videocon tubes have lasted much longer than they ever should have. I tried to replace mine with a NOS tube I found on the internet and as it turns out that these tubes have a shelf life of 10 years so my new tube did not last very long. The good news is the company that made our cameras is still in business. INTEC CAR VISION SYSTEMS does not have parts to fix our cameras but they do have a new camera and monitor that would work with the existing wiring that runs through our coaches. This is important as running new cable would require a lot of disassembly of our interior. As I understand it I will need to figure some way to mount this camera in the back and will need to get into the rear overhead cabinet to access the din plug behind it and plug the new camera in. Then mount the new monitor in the box up front and wire that in. INTEC has this new setup for only $700.00 which is why I have not done it yet, but I will soon. Your mileage may vary. Steve G

well this may mean no camera system for me as a retired widow with limited funds I cannot afford $700 I would rather spend it on fuel to go somewhere. This is the reason I posted was to get opinions both pro and con. Thanks Kay

Hi Steve, love to know the parts numbers off of the INTEC site so I could bookmark for when I have an extra $700 burning a hole in my pocket.....
Thanks, Derek

Thanks for the links. Yes, has to be a 'cheaper' way, but if the cheaper model is only going to last 12 months......

How did it work?

I am very interested in Livexl setup as I have a 91 350 LE that has a non-functioning camera. Which camera did you choose from rearviewsystems and did you replace your monitor as well? I see how you wired it and I wonder if you get any interference or noise from the coaches original wiring? If it all worked well for you I may do exactly as you. Thanks for your input. Steve G

I'm sorry I can't find the info on the camera but I'm sure if you tell them your situation they'll be able to help you. I did not replace the monitor. I am not experiencing any interference or noise from the coaches original wiring.

One of the nice things about the Intec is the markers showing how close you are to those immovable objects...does anyone in the US(southwest) work on the original systems? m

Was at AutoZone today, saw this setup. Realize that the screen is ultra small, but for the price???
