Newfoundland trip

Team,

Going on our Newfoundland trip in a day or two. Will go through MN (mall of America), Soo Locks MI, then through Canada to Niagara Falls, and up to Newfoundland, on the way back I have some training in Virginia, just south of DC. Quick couple questions.
1. Has anyone been to Newfoundland?
2. What do yall recommend we see?
3. Anyone want a visit along the way?
4. Anyone in the DC area?

Thanks!

Sort of....

Lived there when I was 4 years old - sorry not able to help with recent info. But...

I have begun planning a future trip. We're looking at Niagara Falls, Watkins Glen SP in NY, Acadia NP in Maine.

I'll be following your thread for tips myself.

We've done the trip through Minnesota and the UP many times. I can recommend a lot of places to stay and things to see. Lived up there for school at MTU. Let me know if you need some suggestions.

Heading up that way ourselves starting 8/11. Inspired by SilverEagle6's trip last year. we're spending about a week on the coast of Maine on our way up. Let us know if you're coming through at the same time.

Nick,

If you're coming down through BOSTON be sure to stop by for a visit. I'm right on the coast in Plymouth.

We will be in Newfoundland from 18JUL-1AUG. Only planning to see the sights and hike a bit. Things we want to see:
1. Lief Erikson's settlement
2. Gros Morn Nat'l park, will have to look into that helicopter tour
3. Cape Spear
4. Cape Bonavista

Concerns:
1. Refuel points for diesel
3. Curious to see how verizon data works in canada

Wishful thinking:
1. Meeting Bianca Beauchamp

Lots of black smoke on the interstate, loss of power, no throttle response under load, white smoke at idle, rough loping idle. Hoping for bad injector, worst case bad cylinder. Still waiting on determination. Tech seems to think he can get her done today. Immediately installed drive shaft. Expect he will take out injectors to do blowby test, then test injectors, and then p7100 pump.

So, they called me back. Could not tell me how they tested the engine, because tech working on it already went home. Said they have to remove the head to see if there's a dropped or broken valve.... I asked about blowby test, and they said they didn't do one. No idea if they actually tested it or not, but have said they need to pull the head as their next step. With potential for more. Getting a bit leary. Also said earliest they could get to it is next wednesday, and it might not be done until the 22nd, maybe as late as the 29th.

What a drag. Well Im sure youre trying to make the best of the situation. There are a lot worse places than Mineapolis to break down I suppose. Never been there but have always heard really good things about the city. Hopefully you can take in some sites with the family while youre stuck, if the Twins are in town maybe you could catch a ball game or two. Ill sacrifice something to the Airstream gods in the name of Diesel Donna.

Have it transported home and fix it there....rent a car and keep going with your trip....they will probably screw something up and you will only have to repair it again...sounds like you are already getting a run around...my guess is blown head gasket, but I hate guessing. Good luck. Regards, Bob

Bad luck, hope they get you back on the road soon.

I work in Niagara Falls. If you make it here defiantly do the maid of the mist and see Clifton hill.
There's a nice state park just over the border in New York State - 4 mile creek state park. It's a nice quiet place to stay not far from Niagara Falls.

Visit Niagara on the lake if you get the chance, especially if you like wine. It's one of the prettiest towns in Canada.

So I asked their night shift for more details, the called the tech, and walked me through it, and agree with their prognosis. One of the cylinders is popping out of the intake, and in time with the rough idle I was hearing. The tech working it has lots of experience, but based on the detail of questions I was asking he started smiling and we geeked out on engine theory. I recieved the detailed quote, and a quote to ship it. The quote is about 30% less.

Newfoundland trip

Sorry to hear about your troubles! Know you've been planning this trip for a long time. Hope you are able to continue it in some way.

If you think this guy a good, I'd get it fixed and drive it home.
