Very interesting point about the air compressor. It should be a very easy test to test the coolant side of the compressor for an air leak. Such a failure could move a gallon of coolant in 100 miles.

While a compressor leak of this nature is possible, it is very, very, very unlikely.

Did you figure out what caused the problem, and is there any advice you can offer to us other diesel 36 owners?

Sorry for the delay, busy with training.
Third shop spent a week troubleshooting because the first shop would not accept warranty work a second time without extensive testing. It was a misaligned head gasket.

On the plus side we had a great vacation touring the US steel industry from the tanconite mines in Duluth, the soo locks in MI and the processing in Toledo. Did not go AWOL, made it with 12hrs to spare. Need to do research on what I can do due to poor workmanship impacting the majority of my vacation.

Sorry to hear your vacation was so messed up. We are 3000 miles into a cross country trip and am traveling with fingers crossed. We have come from Pa to Maine and am now about 150 miles east of Durango. We have had some heat problems but Richard has handled them. Our biggest problem is the fact the engine will not shut off. ( see post under classics) Right now we are trying to make it to Durango and see if we can get it looked at. Working on the engine each night is not my idea of a fun vacation.

I went to college in Durango (Fort Lewis), enjoy it there and make it to Silverton...I spent many weekends there exploring the old silver mines! I traveled back east over Wolf Creek Pass.....an amazing climb and an amazing decent , I could not imagine doing that in the motor home ! Regards, Bob

While I'm disappointed you couldn't make up to the Great White North I'm glad you at least had some fun and made it home safely.
I hear Uncle Sam takes a dim view of its employees not returning to work on time. ; keeping Uncle sam happy is a good thing.
Did you end up leaving the coach at the shop in Deluth at the second Cummins shop, or were you adding coolant to make it home?
Cheers
Tony

We made it from Duluth to Toledo... shop #3 did the head gasket a third time after 5 days of troubleshooting demanded by first shop b/c of warranty release. Third shop determined 2nd shop misaligned the gasket.

How can they have misaligned a head gasket? There should be alignment pins and if not the head bolts should position the gasket.
I am about to put my 6.0 Ford in for head gasket problems and sure don't want to follow your problems.

You can't screw up the head gasket if you install ARP head studs first.....unless you install the gasket upside down....in any event it just tells me the quality of the "certified Mechanics" they have at the dealership these days. This would never have happened in the union shop I worked in....we had pride in our abilities that the non-union shops didn't have. We got the job done, period.

Bob,
It was a Union shop. Both of the first two were Union. The third one, the one that got it right was not Union.
They refused to use the studs because it was against union policy.

"Misaligned" was likely an easier story to tell the customer than "upside down" and rotated front for back.
Just my opinion.

I left my Union shop in 1989.....26 years ago......a lot has changed for the worse. We had pride back then. In the current Union shops those that want the job can't get it because they don't know the right people....this that don't want the job get it because they're related to someone. Just saying how it used to be. As far as the studs go.....that's another story....I still think you would have been better off transporting it home and doing it yourself.

I've never had the head off a 5.9 but I've done a lot of valve jobs and rebuilds over the past 45 years. I can not imagine how they could misalign the head or gasket. Improper torquing, dropping the head on the block, not cleaning the surfaces, or a few other careless atrocities maybe. My money would be on the head or block. Hope they are both ok and your problems are behind you!

Bob,
I am inclined to agree... and I would have saved time. However, I was looking at cost benefit of time with the reasonable expectation that the job would have been done right... the first time. A lot has changed with regard to pride and ownership of work.
J.Morgan,
You are probably correct.
Kota,
I hope so.

Bob,
Unlikely to make it in June. I have the potential to get a Career School if I get picked up for promotion this fall. The school would begin in May/JUN16. If it was in APR it would be a possibility.
