New Toad

Chummy has a new toad, a Saturn. After camping without the use of a car we finally gave in to the convenience of having a vehicle with us when we travel. The Saturn weighs 2090 pounds but I did have the hitch reinforced with some heavy angle iron bolted to the receiver and frame. I am able to tow the car without even noting it is there. The Isuzu has so much torque and the rear end ratio at 5.6 is so high it pulls the Saturn with no effort at all. This winter we plan to change out the rear end for a lower ratio maybe a 4.2 so I can lower the RPM and pick up a tad bit more speed.

Congrats on your new Saturn. They are probably the preferred toad among the RV parks that I service.

Given their great popularity, they are also very high on the most stolen vehicle list so please be careful and take appropriate security measures for your new baby.

Do you have a braking system on the toad?

I am using the very cheapest Blue Ox, $49.95 tow bar, I simply could not get excited about the other ones for the added money. As for the braking system the Saturn weighs 2090 pounds and we travel mainly in the flat mid-west so we opted to not go with the brakes for now. Maybe later if we expand our travels.

As far as I can tell the only functional difference between the tow bars is convenience in hooking up and unhooking.

Our Scion weighs only a little more than that but since we live in the mountains and travel a lot in the west I decided to put one in. I never felt like I couldn't stop before installing it but I can stop with less effort and in less distance now.
