New tires for the Zepplin

I checked the subforum for axles, wheels & tires--there wasn't much there. But I really need some info on replacing my 14 year old tires. What's on it now is Bridgestone 8R19.5 12 plys. While I can still get 8R19.5's from one or 2 manufacturers, I am told that, should I have a problem on the road, nobody that does road help is likely to have a tire that size to mount. A tire vendor has recommended that I use 225.70/19.5, which will have a slight effect on my odometer/speedometer, and there should be about .75 inch of space between the tires on the duals. Has anyone done this, and, have there been any problems??

Second question: Does anyone have any experience, good or bad, with Sumitomo or Yokohama tires. I really like Michelins, but I'm buying 9 of them, so a cheaper alternative is a requirement, at $400-$550 a tire.

Thanks in advance

Rob

There's a pretty thorough discussion here: http://www.airforums.com/forums/f311...ave-99465.html , with a link to a second thread. Several members expressed concern about the clearance between the dualies as well as clearance between the tag tires and inner fender with 225/70r tires, but at least one reported having made the switch with no problems. I put 225/70r tires on my steer axle last year and like them.

Mr Bob, what size tires are on your 370? I don't think Michelin make the XRV in 8R19.5" anymore. Other than Chinese tires, Japanese Toyo MZ120's and Korean Hankook AH11's. I think that's it for 8R19.5 tires. I could be wrong though.

Cheers
Tony

I just recently had the Michelin P225/70R19.5 XZE tires installed on the 350LE. Seem to ride a little nicer than the old tires. No problems to report.

I recently had 8 new Firstone 225s installed on my 345. No interferance issues. The new tires made a big improvement in ride, handling and especially safety.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, I'm running Sailun S737's on the rear and Hercules H-803's on the front. Both sets are 225/70 19.5 without any rubbing issues. Both sets are also aggressive tread patterns (similar to an all terrain LT tire) as opposed to radially grooved. I purchased the front set in the middle of nowhere (Iraan, TX) after a blowout, and they were the only choice I had. The rears were purchased locally, but I live pretty far out, so again had one choice that I could get installed in a day, and my work load prevented waiting for a week. I've put about 15,000 miles on the set in the last year and a half without issue, including a few 3000+ mile trips, in all sorts of weather. For what it's worth I also run centramatics and bilstein shocks. I also start and end every trip with 2 miles of gravel road and 3 cattle guards to get to pavement. Good luck!

I've been running Goodyear G647 in size 8Rx19.0 for years and never had a problem finding them. They are 12 ply and mud and snow rated, M+S molded in the sidewall. I live only 1/2 mile up a dirt road but put many dirt miles on in Alaska a couple of years ago. Steers well and ride is comfortable. Current cost is listed at $331 and I run Dyna-beads for balancing.
