Question New 1982 310 Diesel owner

HELP!!!

Just purchased a 1982 310 Diesel in CA. I'm planning to drive it back to MI in a week. What do I need to know about the Isuzu Diesel? The PO said it runs at about 180 degrees, but sometimes goes up, going up hills. What's the max temp these can run at??

What else do I need to know about the coach?

I'm a long time 1973 GMC 260 owner with an Olds 455 in it.

Thanks

Gary Greenwood

Welcome to the fold! Hopefully some diesel owners will respond. Sorry if this is obvious but be sure to inspect tires, brakes, and suspension before you head out. All of these components have required major work on my 84 310.

Also, in my experience, you can't trust the temp gauge unless you have verified its accuracy.

Also, I have read lots of posts about cruise control problems on the classics. I had to completely replace mine. I understand that is a bigger deal for a diesel than a gasser like mine.

Hi, Gary - don't sweat the engine temp 'till it goes over 215 - but DO sweat the tranny temp climbing hills. If you don't have a tranny temp gauge, keep your intake manifold (turbo boost) pressure BELOW the top end of the YELLOW when hill climbing, until you do get a tranny temp gauge installed. You don't want to ask how I know about all this, but it involves over 140k mi on our '84 310 with the Isuzu diesel. Anything else I can help with just ask ... email or private message OK. Jamie

Welcome to our world. Change the oil & filter, and BOTH fuel filters if you have time,
otherwise the one under the passenger side front wheel well for sure. Ditto on the
gauges, you will drive by your boost & pyrometer when pulling hills. Keep a eye on the
water temp. & make sure to keep fluid in the overflow canister. Check the trans fluid &
rear end, give her a lube, check the rear air bags for pressure in the rear tank, don't
depend on the on-board compresser, get a flexible hose with air chuck & gauge, check
brake fluid & power steering, check power steering hoses . We bought "Bess" with 28K;
have 202395 as we speak. The engine is bullet-proof, turbo & trans are not. Best, M

Just another thought, can you ask the PO if the belts & hoses were ever changed, what's
the mileage? Most KOA have wi-fi.......get in touch if you have problems.
