need window latch help

I've replaced the driver side slider but can't figure out how to install the latch. The window has a hole that is not large enough for the latch to fit into and I don't see how to remove the "button on a rod" and re-attach after inserting it into the hole. Any help is greatly appreciated. I searched and could not find a previous thread. Thanks joe

Check to see if it has a small hex nut in it...that loosened up will allow the small silver handle I think your talking about come off.
