Owner or ownee

Agree with Dadstoy...I've got about 130K also and it's hard to hold it at 60...it wants to run faster. The Banks Power Pack might help, but it runs great and doesn't run hot. I think you're better off than getting one that sat idle alot.
Good luck, we've all been where you are...Congrats

I think you might have something there.....who is the owner?
What would the Banks Power Pack do? Thanks, paula

I have the Banks system on my 454. The principle is to allow the engine to "breath" better. More air into the engine and more exhaust out for better performance.
The air filter is replace with a larger air filter and cover for the filter. The base of the original air cleaner is still used...so that all smog equipment stays in place. The stock exhaust manifolds are replaced with headers. The exhaust pipe and mufflers are also replaced all for better performance and gas mileage.
Make sure the header continue to have the smog air pump tubes and attached for Calif smog. Banks is smog legal in calif as long as it is the calif version and all smog equipment remains and is working.
Now the big question is, is it worth the money? If you have it already that great. If you don't, it might take a long time to recoup the cost in better mileage and performance.

I think th reason my dad installed it years ago is the he kept having problems with the stock exhaust manifolds. They would continue to blow out the exhaust manifold gaskets and leak all the time. They also warp. I thing one cracked and that is why he went ahead with it.

With a 454 on that small platform, I see no reason for any Banks application, unless you want to drive from LA to Ajo in 15 minutes.

What is happening in Ajo and where is it? Don't need to get there in 15 minutes no how....on the other hand, if it could get us there from here in 15 minutes, maybe we need it. paula

Hubby not impressed
When I told him the 454 7.4 motor was used in Corvettes, he was not impressed.....he thinks the Corvette is a little car and doesn't need much to make it go. His idea of a good time is a 1983 911 red convertible that he purchased new. Lucky for him, I can't reach the pedals to shift.....besides the top down blows my hair. However, it might make a good toad...........don't even go there......Different strokes.....paula

Ajo is between Tucson and Yuma, close to the border. A very laid-back community close to the Organ Pipe National Monument, one of our favorites.

The 454 was used in a lot Chevy vehicles including the SS Silverado (very fast) and it is still in demand by car nuts and racers (probably going to to Ajo). Very good motor and plenty of power even in the P30 chassis...when these were commercial vehicles they often ran more than 300K in stop and go city traffic before they were traded in. I used to work at a Chevy dealership and every time any 454 was in a wrecked car/truck the mechanics would line up to buy it.
The Banks Power Pack is not just for power, it offers better breathing (economy), and the engine will run cooler since it breathes better. As a certified car nut it also sounds really cool and you get a nifty shiny enormous stainless steel exhaust tip, and as any hot rodder will tell you shiny is cool.

That means you can't wrap your dinner in foil and have it cooked on the manifold in five minutes? The best one I ever saw was a GMC mo/ho owner we got to know at a campground in AZ. We had talked the night before, and he explained he was a hot rodder who specialized in custom engines and had beefed the Olds engine "a tad". We both left at the same time in the morning, and I motioned him to take the lead out. He looked at me and said, "watch this". He put his foot in it and the front tires smoked like a NASCAR race winner. Very impressive, to say the least.

Met Keyair and his wife today
Keyair and Mrs. Keyair stopped by to see our new motorhome on their way to LAX.....he is largely responsible for our purchase.....although he says he tried to talk me out of it.......maybe he did and I just couldn't hear him anyway he has been enormously supportive and helpful in many ways. They can attest that we really have a 1982 24' Airstream.....maybe the only one on the planet.....and it happens to need an air pump.......anyone have one for a 454 7.4 Chevy???.....working on smogging.......oh the joys of motorhomehood......in California.
Thanks again, Keyair ......p

I haven't even checked to see if I still have an air pump...it's been running great and I'm afraid to touch it. I suspect it's gone since I have the Banks pack, but I'll let you know by next week. We don't need them here and when it hits 25 most states don't check emissions anymore...I'm sure California is the exception.

California locked the rolling 25 year exception at model year 1975.

The 1982 doesn't qualify for the exemption in CA
Sadly--or maybe not sadly if indeed she is a polluter, we have to put the 82 back the way she was when she was manufactured. So all the stuff that was gutted probably in Florida is now being searched for.........Let's hope we can find the stuff she needs to live in CA.....otherwise? I have been told it doesn't need a catalyic converter......p

Paula,
CARB has a website and phone number to help locate original smog equipment. Other than that the best bet is junk yards, aka automotive recycling centers.

Paula,
You might give Banks Engineering a call.
Banks Power | 82-95 GM - 7.4L>>PowerPack® System
As long as you are going through the effort and expense, they might have some solutions that will make it legal and get a bit more performance and economy to boot.

Will check those sites out, thank you
Went to the CA DMV this morning......had an appointment so my wait time was not too terrible. And, they gave me credit for the sales tax I paid in Florida for which I am grateful. They gave me a temp license that is good until Jan 31, 2012......so things are moving along. Thanks for the sites. paula
