Sitting idle not good

Well, we may have one that has been driven a lot and sat around a lot since then.....don't know how I would ever find that out but it has been driven over 107,000 miles.....and it appears to have been sitting for a while in FL as well......yes, we have Good Sam but I am hoping we won't have to use it.

This motor (Chevy 454 7.4 on a P 30) was used in the Corvette for some years......... being raised in Missouri, I always wanted to be a surfer girl and have a Corvette or at least a Camaro....this MH may be the closest thing I will get to a Corvette.......and since you can't tell a book by it's cover.....only a few of driving down the road will know that we are really driving a Corvette.....so to speak. My husband is wondering if it is going to have enough power.

Thanks for all of your encouragement.....I have a feeling we are going to need it....but I have to admit, I really like her---thinking of Sweet P or Suite P or SteP (Ste is abbreviation for Suite as in our SteSpot). Paula

I can see that you are going to enjoy that Airstream Paula.
I can't wait to hear all those fireside stories that this machine will generate, and I suspect you are the perfect person to tell us all the details.
Have fun and we hope to see you on the road soon.
Dave

Dont worry about the power of the stock 454 Paula.
My 454 powered '87 Suburban can chirp a tire on the 1 to 2 upshift on full power, and you REALLY have to watch it in the wet.
My 345 is surprisingly fast and weighs maybe 5000lb more than your peanut... On my trip home we climbed a couple of steep hills, inc one on a narrow road coming over the Continental Divide, peaking at over 9000' and it had no sign of struggling.
I was told, that in the 80's Chevy rated their engines at the output of the transmission, rather than the normal engine flywheel number. I was told this was to downplay the power and up play the economy.
The power rating for the Carb topped 454 was 230hp and 360ftlbs Torque, but I am told its 290hp and 400ftlb Torque..

I was telling my story at our last rally--feeling pretty bold about flying to Florida by myself because my hubby had meetings, wheeling and dealing with the pawn broker at the used car lot and only having $60 to hold the vehicle and trying to make sure I wasn't dealing with axe murderers. Anyway, we had some new members to our unit sitting across from me at lunch who have a new travel trailer and their story? Well, the husband negotiated a deal from California in Florida and because he was working sent his wife to FL to inspect with 4 pages of things to check out.....turns out she had to go to a nudist retirement community to see the trailer......I kid you not......she said when they drove into the park, they drove past a couple who were lounging outside reading the newspaper wearing only hats and flipflops .....by the way, the couple negotiated enough in the deal to pay for all new upholstery......think about it.

Anyway, my story is really tame compared to their's. Let's hope it continues to be that way....we are not looking for any notoriety here.

Thanks again everyone for your support and encouragement. It helps us to know that we are not the only ones interested in these motorhomes.

By the way, Fred from Fred's Vintage website told me someone has contacted him about purchaseing our 24 footer. I told him to wait until I get an estimate on all the repairs ....just kidding.

Paula

Owner or ownee

Agree with Dadstoy...I've got about 130K also and it's hard to hold it at 60...it wants to run faster. The Banks Power Pack might help, but it runs great and doesn't run hot. I think you're better off than getting one that sat idle alot.

Good luck, we've all been where you are...Congrats

Bill
I think you might have something there.....who is the owner?

What would the Banks Power Pack do? Thanks, paula

I have the Banks system on my 454. The principle is to allow the engine to "breath" better. More air into the engine and more exhaust out for better performance.

The air filter is replace with a larger air filter and cover for the filter. The base of the original air cleaner is still used...so that all smog equipment stays in place. The stock exhaust manifolds are replaced with headers. The exhaust pipe and mufflers are also replaced all for better performance and gas mileage.

Make sure the header continue to have the smog air pump tubes and attached for Calif smog. Banks is smog legal in calif as long as it is the calif version and all smog equipment remains and is working.

Now the big question is, is it worth the money? If you have it already that great. If you don't, it might take a long time to recoup the cost in better mileage and performance.

I think th reason my dad installed it years ago is the he kept having problems with the stock exhaust manifolds. They would continue to blow out the exhaust manifold gaskets and leak all the time. They also warp. I thing one cracked and that is why he went ahead with it.

With a 454 on that small platform, I see no reason for any Banks application, unless you want to drive from LA to Ajo in 15 minutes.

What is happening in Ajo and where is it? Don't need to get there in 15 minutes no how....on the other hand, if it could get us there from here in 15 minutes, maybe we need it. paula

Hubby not impressed

When I told him the 454 7.4 motor was used in Corvettes, he was not impressed.....he thinks the Corvette is a little car and doesn't need much to make it go. His idea of a good time is a 1983 911 red convertible that he purchased new. Lucky for him, I can't reach the pedals to shift.....besides the top down blows my hair. However, it might make a good toad...........don't even go there......Different strokes.....paula

Ajo is between Tucson and Yuma, close to the border. A very laid-back community close to the Organ Pipe National Monument, one of our favorites.
