Motorhome Serial Number/VIN
I am under the impression that A/S did not keep records of how many motorhomes were built, I have a 1979 24' Excella Motorhome and the last digits are 004 that makes it the 4th one built.
If everyone with a classic motorhome could enter there year, length, and last digits of their serial # mabye we could get an Idea how many were built in each year. odviously the highest numbers we find of each would tell us that they built at least that many that year.
If anyone has an Idea of more info that would be helpfull post it too and I will edit it into this post.

Richard 1979 #004
PeterH 79 #143
Alan 82 #991
Dennis 87 #10777
Now we know that they built at least 143 in 1979 of all sizes
once the blanks get filled in it will be simple math to figure out each years production totals, we may never know how many were built of each size but mabye we will get an idea of each years totals
If I am wrong in my thinking let me know.
Keep posting year size and number of your unit , or any other units you may come across in your travels.

production numbers
I wanna play, too.
My 1990 345 LE's last six of the VIN is 322280.
When was the last year of production for the Classic Motorhome ? "Classic" meaning [to me, anyway] the aluminum skinned beaties.

Interesting results
The Airstream I.D. numbers (not the GM chassis number) might indicate that Motor Homes were given sequencial numbers at Jackson Center, regardless of length. In other words, in my case, (A/S Serial #10777) I might have the 10,777th motor home built since AS started MH production in 1979.
Does anyone have an alternative interpretation?
I hope more info comes in from other owners to verify this trend.

Re: Interesting results
That's an interesting hypothesis, Dennis.... but do you think they built 10,000 motorhomes in eight years? That'd have to be an extraoridinary production rate.

..."my 84 was 0215 the airstrean no plate is 1A9GAR23EJOIO215"
Al:
Any chance the last 6 figures in your sequence might be 010215 instead of 0I0215?
We may be on the verge of making some real progress here.
Is it possible the factory restarted the numbering sequence in '83 or '84? That would make the number of builds between '84 (Al's at 0215), and mine in '87 (at 0777) MUCH more believable -- 562 units in 3 years (about 3 1/2 per week).
I'll recheck mine in the daylight to confirm that my AS number is, in fact, 010777 and not 0I0777.

My 1986 345 is 10705. This is starting to make some sense. That would put my 86 72 production units before Dennis' 87. And if Al's I turns out to be a 1 then I'm 490 production units away from his 84.
Pehaps mine was a late 86 and Dennis' was an early 87?
Curious to see more on this.

I hate to even mention this but......
Maybe we should ask this question on the Airstream company forum site and see if a factory associate can answer this question for us.
I'll add whatever to my site. It has always been a work in progress for the benefit of everyone.
I went ahead and did the dirty deed myself.

My A/S Serial Number is 1A9 BGAR 22EJ 010212. While going through a mountain of paperwork in found in the coach, I determined that my coach was a one owner and the dealer paid the Airstream division of Beatrice Foods $65,830.50 for my coach on 8/31/83. Wow!!!

Found this on Carfax
The Vehicle ID Number (VIN) can be found on dashboards, driver's side door jamb stickers, and title documents. All cars and light trucks built after 1981 have a unique 17-character VIN that contains valuable information about that vehicle's history
That would suggest that numbers of vehicles prior to 82 are different than previous years, this accounts for early coachs number differences, now we need to figure out what it all means.
hopefully as this list grows we will see a for sure pattern emerge, and the numbers will make sense.
I am including my full number as I think this will help us decode info.
I dont think this poses any treat as the number is clearly visable to anyone in all vehicles, so if everyone would include their full number I think that would be helpfull. Also include month and year on tag , as my 79 was built in 78.
79 24' M24R9V5004 built in sept 78
