Dave,
To be honest if you're not a good researcher it would be extremely difficult to get anything done on these rigs. My guess is for every hour I work on the Argosy I spend 4 hours researching where to find something or how to do something.

Well I will admit I've gotten faster at researching the last few years...

Had the motor cover completely off doing some things and thought Id go ahead and grease the water pump. I greased it once 3 years ago but that was when I had the whole front end torn down back to the motor. Its been over 5000 miles since. I have no idea how often I should be greasing it but figured it wouldnt hurt for sure. Ive read what a nightmare it is to get to with everything in place.
It really wast that bad. With the motor cover COMPLETELY off, I laid on top of the motor and used a pneumatic grease gun with a rigid/angled tip. Was able to slide it between the upper radiator hose and the valve cover. Would have been a two person job, or impossible, with a manual pump grease gun.

It's more important to grease them regularly on engines that sit a bunch. Next time you have access you might consider replacing the zerk with a remote greasing tube that's easy to get the gun on.

If I'm honest, I know how the Canadian forces feel about their old Sea King helicopters, as for every hour of wheel time in my Mistress there has been twenty hours of research, twenty hours of work and $500.00 per hour.
I figure I have one or two more years at this ratio, what with redoing the electrics and the exterior still to do; but hoping I can get it to one hour research, one hour maintenance, and $50.00 per hour wheel time.
To all that make the research possible, and easier, Bkahler, wxbuoy, Mayco, Tevake, Smartstream, Steamquest, Kota, Keyair and last but definitely not least, Shepherd57, a great thanks mates. Without you lot I'd have no hair left, no wife, and would have sold the kids to pay for it.
Cheers
Tony

Apparently I have paid for the next 5000 hours wheel time up front
And that is with with doing the majority of the research and a lot of the small fiddly work myself. For example, I 'wasted' (according to my wife) 6 hours yesterday experimenting with the best position/mechanism for fitting the rear view cameras on the rear light panel. That achieved I now have to modify the actual panel and drop it back to Airstream to refit this week.

It's a hobby! Probably no more expensive that drinking or doing drugs. You get a sense of accomplishment, keep your mind active, and feel better.

Before AS MoHos my habit was boats. Got tired of laying in my back in bilge water to grease all the drive and steering bearings.
Installed a remote greaser. Became a one handed job so you could hold your beer in the other.

I must say I am honored to be mentioned among such a knowledgeable group of moho owners.
That being said one of my driving characteristics is that I am quite lazy. If I can find an easy way to do it, that is the direction I take. With that in mind remote grease access is a great idea. There is however one thing that bothers me. You do not get eyes and hands on what you are greasing. It's great to know you have plenty of lubrication but it is hard to beat having your eyes and paws intimately involved in the innards and underbellies of these aluminum skinned beasts. It is a great way to observe and try to stay ahead of those things that can really ruin your day when they fail.
Getting back to the Isuzu water pump fitting. My personal choice of grease gun is a pistol grip type that can be operated with one had. Instead of the hard pipe between the gun and coupling I have installed two lengths of flexible hose. This allows you to reach the difficult fittings without having to find room for the gun too. Remember I am lazy and always look for the easy. One day while crawling around under the beast I was feeling unusually flexible and was able to grease the water pump from the right front wheel well. That was a one time event and the normal greasing takes place from the top when the doghouse cover has been removed.

So Dan, how often (ballpark) would you suggest giving it a shot of grease? Annually, at oil change?
In regards to being able to see and feel the zerk or part you are greasing, I was concerned about that too. Making sure I had a tight fit on the zerk and not just spewing grease all over the sides rather than penetrating into the pump. I managed to get my punkin back in there enough to actually see the zerk after I loaded it with grease. All seemed good. Unlike some parts though, I couldnt see when old grease oozes out and then you know that youve got the new grease where it belongs. On this water pump, do you just shoot it a lot and then some more, and figure thats enough? Its awfully close to the alternator belts and I was careful.

Wheel time? I'm not sure I even remember what it's like to drive a motorhome

That sounds about right. Remember in some ways you should consider yourself a designer and it takes time to design something and get it right. Very seldom does it come out right the first time.
