Nice pic! Looks so cozy. I am really impressed with your last trip, and hope to do something similar in the next couple of years. Mammoth or Big Bear is not so far from me.

I wish too, but my plan to win the $1.6b on the lottery fell short.
Suffice to say, it would have involved a '95ish 360 pusher, so that nobody would have ever known... Live like a Billionaire, look like an average Joe.
Thanks for the compliments.. I wish I had more to show for it 5 years + in...
Your trip, and the other trips posted have proved it can be done, and have my appetite whetted. I think the "Cold weather use" thread will add some real world knowledge of what simple mods can be done to improve the comfort and reliability to our rigs!

Had a generator problem today. Went out and started up my propane Onan 6500 for its monthly running time. It started right up and after letting it warm up for a few minutes I put a 1500w load on it. Checked my voltage and it was great at 119. I was out there for about 15 mins doing chores and then came inside to let it run for a half hour. Went back out and the generator had stopped. Turned the load off and tried to restart and it cranks over just fine but couldnt get it to start back up. Its been running just fine, has fresh plugs, plug wires, and oil. Checked the oil level to be sure and it was good. It cranked and cranked but no fire. Sounds like its not getting fuel. Checked the plug wires to make sure they were tight, pulled the 5a fuses and they were good.....no faint smell of propane when cranking. Dont know much about these generators but its a direct feed from the propane tank and has its own propane regulator. I dont have any idea if its the original regulator or not.

Any ideas on next step? If it was getting fuel to the cylinders I would think I would smell some residue from the exhaust if it wasnt burning it up. I dont have a manometer to check pressure. Just seems odd that it would quit like that since its been running well with good voltages under load and all. I would need to drop the unit to change the points, which I have not done...I would have to take it in for that.

Any ideas or suggestions on next step that I could check are greatly appreciated...as always, thank you fellas for any help

Mike

Mike, if it's cold outside I'm betting the carburetor or regulator iced up. Not sure what else could cause a fuel feed problem with propane.

What's your outdoor temps right now?

Went out and manually worked the throttle linkage back and forth, used some spray lubricant on the linkage. Cranked it over and it eventually started, ran for about 45mins till I shut it down with no issues. Well, that was weird. Maybe my linkage was hanging up but that would be too easy. Try again in the morning. Eventually I need to bite the bullet and bring it in to the Onan service center about 45 mins from home. Have them put a new set of points in it and give it a good once over.

I believe there is a filter in system. Might have some moisture in the system that is freezing as the propane evaporates at the engine.

I have been trying to track that down Dave. I saw some reference to a fuel filter in reading last night. It did start this morning and its running right now but if there is a fuel filter it needs changed!

Well Ive exhausted my search abilities to find any specifics in regard to a fuel filter on these Onan 6.5 generators. Cant find anything specific to a filter but ran across some reference to a screen in the solenoid gas valve. My valve of course is discontinued and cant find a schematic. It is an Eaton 1014 3-b.

It started this morning and I ran it for quite awhile, so maybe the no-start yesterday after it had run for 30 mins was a fluke. Probably wont happen again until Im boondocked somewhere with low batteries.

In fact, I couldn't find much information at all about the conversion from gas to propane for our Classics.

Mike I know this will sound contrary but I still think you had an icing problem. From what I've been able to find while searching is if your tank is either to small or low on fuel the vapor pressure will be less and at certain times when the temperature and humidity are just right icing can occur and create the systems you experienced.

You might want to post your question on the SmokStak site. Great people and they really know generators. They've helped me out a bunch of times when I was working my Kohler generator and on a few other generators I was playing with at the time.

Brad

Thanks Brad. You are absolutely correct about SmokStak. Thats where I spent a good deal of time reading today. Tons of generator information and knowledge.

Mike,

I have nothing to add and really no technical ability.. But I do have the service manual and a spare propane filter in the original package with the numbers if you want the info.

Little did you know a couple of years back Dave, you would be a "Rivet Master" wading in with such good info!
