i found the bad connection behind the dash, it was between the icc blink and the light switch. There were two blue inline splices. one used correctly and the one at fault was to large forthe wire being used. It showed overheat and corrosion. Soldered the two wires together to eliminate the problem. The hazard light problem 75%cured with new column switch still have right rear blinker out. next inline to troubleshoot
Thanks for all the info

PDF Page 20

I also have a 1979 Owner's Manual and on page 20 in my book the maximum loaded trailer weight which it can pull is 4,000 lbs. I think your manual has been changed. Anybody else????

Jerry,

Sounds like you're making progress.

Another area or component that is prone to failure is the ignition switch. There is a 30 amp contact that feeds the main fuse block where the heater/ac blower connects as well as the air conditioner clutch and the air compressor for the rear air bags are powered from. When we got our 310 the wire to all three of those components were melted and the connectors were shot. Just the air bag compressor alone can draw near 30 amps and then when you add the heater blower motor you're overloading the contact on the ignition switch. Kind of a dumb installation by Airstream if you ask me.

The best fix for the problem is to use that contact on the ignition switch to energize several relays where you can spread the load across multiple contacts. This means redoing or replacing the main fuse block with something more easily modified but well worth it if you ask me. I haven't done this mod yet but I'm going to as I constantly have low battery voltage because of this issue.

I did change the location for power feed to the rear air bag compressor by adding a relay in near the compressor and running power to it from the generator compartment where the big battery cable connects to the starter solenoid. The compressor started running better after that mod.

Anyway I have a lot of electrical mods planned for our 310. Who knows someday I might even get them done .

Brad

I received the book from Secretarial Services and it is a big help. Still chasing the tail light open. While chasing the wires i found a section above the muffler that got hot and melted the outer insulation. I think it was from the muffler install not just heat. follwed the wire to the dash and now it looks like i have to pull the fuse block to get to the connecter behind it. What i have Found out so far is that The unit quit on the former owner and they tried pouring gas in the carborater, which produced a fire. I have found extingisher media in all the connecters. I new of the fire when i bought the unit. which meant that i had to do some reupholstery. That is done. still a lot of items to check and service.

Thumbs up Thanks outofcontrol!

We have the shop manual (and two Isuzu engine manuals) for the 81 280 but not the owners manual.

Isuzu/Diesel folder?

I have not been able to find the Isuzu folder in the PDF files (may be my poor searching skills). Is that available?
Thanks,
Ken

I have my 1982-1983 Airstream motorhome manual scanned, but it is pretty big. Let me know if you need a particular section.

Is there any way I could get a copy of the Isuzu manuals? I can't find them anywhere and I have an 81 A/S 28' Excella with an Isuzu engine. Also looking for any help on getting the wiring information for the dash wiring. Thanks...

Please keep in mind that many of these manuals are still available from Airstream and that they are copyrighted. It is illegal to distriubute them as copies, and Airforums cannot condone or support illegal activity.

I checked with Airstream and they do not have copies of the dash wiring or the Isuzu engine, but will check again. I did order the documents that were available. I will also check with Isuzu and Chevy. Will let you know what I find. If you have the contact information for Isuzu or Chevy for documentation inquiry, I would appreciate the pointer...

Talk to these guys.

Hamilton Engine Sales
5540 N.E. Columbia Blvd.
Portland, Oregon 97218 Craig (503) 280-1353

These are industrial/marine engines and the highway trucks use the same engine but different part number system and the two don't talk to each other. Craig seems to know as much about these engines as anybody I have run into.

What info you can find about the dash wiring will be in any GM light truck manual but if you look back through the forums the wiring under the dash is always a mess having been heavily modified by Airstream, previous owners, service mechanics and anybody's guess who else.

Good luck.
