Installing a back-up camera help, reverse on steering column of motorhome?

All the components of my back-up camera and monitor are installed on my 24' 1982 Classic. Works great with one big hang-up. From the monitor there is a lead that you hook up to the wire that becomes hot when you shift into "reverse." This activates the monitor to display your camera image. I do not want the display on all the time.

I removed the steering column cover to locate this wire I assume would be there but am stumped. On the wire harness all of the wires seem to be associated with either brakes, hazards, directional, or hot always.

Has anyone figured out where to connect the monitor wire on the steering column so that it becomes "hot" when shifting into reverse? I know I could run a wire outside of the cab, but there must be a lead I can't seem to locate.

Thanks for any info!

You could tap into a reverse light lead?

Hi, you need to find a back-up light wire; The steering column only has the mechanical linkage. You may find a wire loom going to the rear of the vehicle, for all of the tail and running lights, it should be in there.

Well, I figured it out! Thank goodness.

So, I mistakenly thought I could locate a "reverse wire" on the steering column harness. Nope. Not quite. However, after some research and fiddling I have now become aware of the Neutral Safety switch. It is located on the backside of the steering column and serves our motorhome two functions.

It keeps the starter from engaging if you are in gear and try to start AND is the switch for the reverse lights. It does this by having a small notch of plastic that inserts into the steering column and gets rotated as you shift gears.

My switch was bad. I could start in Drive, the starter always "slipped" and my reverse lights didnt work. I

I started to try and clean it up but a new switch is only $20 from Auto Zone. They all work fine now.

All I had to do to then was tap my monitor for my back up camera into the correct lead off the Neutral safety switch and presto- it comes on automatically when I shift into reverse!
