Hey Everyone! I just bought a 310 for restoration. Help needed!

Howdy!

I hope everyones silver dream machines are doing well. I just returned from driving it back from Collins Mississippi, to Portland Oregon. During the 3049 mile trip, I only had problems hot starting a couple times. Other then that I drove it back at 80mph! The reason we went so far out of our way to get this particular motorhome, is it has a 7.3 International diesel in it. I'll calculate milage tonight and post what my average was.

I'm helping a busy friend facilitate the restoration of this beast. The main themes are;
+Green
+Livability
+Utility

My friend is very sensitive to chemicals, so doing a green interior free of synthetics is very important. Secondly, we'll run on biodiesel, and have the biggest solar charging system we can fit.
Regarding livability, this RV will have 2 primary uses. In the summertime it'll be a festival mobile, as my friend is a promoter and organizer. During the winter, it'll mostly sit on rural property and act as a second home.
Utility is just a no brainer, right? We want to get the maximum use out of all 31 feet!!
I'm so happy that the airstream community remains strong today, and I'm looking forward to any help I can get from those of you who are more experienced! We plan on having RV Pro Service in Vancouver, Washington do most of the work. Any chance someone has experience with them?

One of the first steps I'd like to accomplish is having a 3d model made for prototyping ideas. Does anyone have experience with this or know where I can find an existing model?

I love this forum. Where else can you find things like (to paraphrase): I just drove a 310 from Mississippi to Oregon, over 3,000 miles, and drove 80 mph most of the time. My main interest is being green.

Sweet looking 310!

Good luck on finding a 3D model. In fact, it will probably be difficult to find a decent set of floor-plans other than the brochures on Airstream's site. Scroll down to the motorhome section. Not great, but certainly better than nothing.

Best of luck with your new project. Keep us updated. Good start with the photos, now we need more.

I can't wait to see how that Motor conversion looks and hear how the mileage and noise levels were!

Congrats on the purchase and I'm glad to see that beauty has found a new home. She was in Collins for quite a while, I have been passing her on my travels.

@Keyair, We are definitely going to polish it, how could you not?? The noise wasn't too bad, (the rattling windows were louder) but extra cab insulation is on the list of to-do.

Twice a year we make the trip from Kansas City to Mobile to visit relatives. While going down Highway 49 I have looked at that Airstream. I have passed it at least 8 times. If I didn't always have my wife with me I would have stopped and looked it over, but she always said, "keep on driving!" I am glad it went to a good home. Did you put new tires on it before going that far? I was intriqued that it had a diesel engine. You have made a great purchase. Congratulations.

Thanks QuietWater! The dualies were only a year old and had very few miles on them, but I swapped out the front tires for some Michelins, as the previous were crusty. I really wanted to put Goodyears on, but the nearest dealership only had Michelins. I'm really impressed with the diesels perfomance considering it's age. The previous owner claimed the swap, which is an International IDI 7.3 (pre powerstroke) and an Allison 4spd transmission, only had 30k on em.

Is this the Airstream that I believe was on eBay or Craigslist for quite awhile? Looks like you got yourself a great Airstream. Pix of the engine bay would be what I'd like to see next. I'm almost certain that the 7.3 was in the Ford Super Duty??? If it was, I'm almost certain that it was turbo'd as well. I'll go looking. Can't wait to see what you do next.

I'll snap engine pics tomorrow. Im sure that this particular one is NA, and is the indirect injection system, as opposed to the powerstroke with direct injection, some of which are turbo'd. I'm a diesel newbie otherwise, and am doing my best to educate myself. It was on ebay for quite awhile. My friend and I have been researching the optimal RV for retrofitting to his needs, and as ya'll already know, nothing beats an Airstream!

Solar: AGM batteries, good controller, whole-house inverter(plan space for more batteries)...AC filters may need a change to something more like HEPA...shower: a venturi-type shower head will reduce H2O consumption and still feel like a real shower...replacing the doghouse insulation and seals should reduce the noise level...
A long, leisurely trip to ANYWHERE really cleans out the mental cobwebs...

We'll see if it's in the budget to use all aerogel spaceloft insulation. If we can use a couple inches of it, we could get an r-value of 20! Any idea about how many square feet of insulation would be needed for the 310?

Another idea would be to do a layer of Iceynene spray foam, and a layer of spaceloft. The spray foam is just so good at sealing out any drafts.

I took the 310 to Rv Pro Service yesterday, and wasn't impressed with their level of enthusiasm. Im sure they do good work, but as I was getting excited about the mods, the head tech didn't seem to care too much or get into it himself. Considering we're gonna invest somewhere around $50k into it, they better be doing jumping jacks, if not backflips.
I decided to give George Sutton Rv (in Eugene) a call. I'd tried to get a quote from them previous to buying the 310, but had difficulty getting in touch via email. I managed I do just that today, and things are looking much more promising! I spoke with Tom the service manager, and he sounded enthused to work on the project. They are the biggest AS dealer in the west, and they really know their stuff! Tom said they even restored Eddie Vedder's AS I'll let you know how it goes. I'll have rv pro do some work on the chassis, like springs up front, and have them install an engine battery, so it's easier to drive down to Eugene. Other then that, it makes much more sense to have an AS pro do the work.
