Yes most fresh water tanks are made of HDPE which is probably the olded food grade plastic there is. I remember stuff being made out of it in the 60's. I think Tupperware is HDPE.

Even stainless put a small amount of contaminates in water .. it contains Chromium... so take care with the quality of stainless materials used to make tanks...
I drink from my Airstream's 24 year old fresh water tank any time I boondock which has been quite a few times. I was really paranoid about it at first but then I slowly got over it. It tastes good to me, it's filtered through a carbon filter and is probably just as safe as many of the other things we put in our bodies every day. I imagine its safer than a lot of them. To each there own but once I quit thinking about it so much and just started drinking it it never bothered me again
water bladders are a consideration...we drink and cook from our FW tank, and have since we owned it...now, having said that, I'm someone who winterizes with cheap vodka...

We also drink and use water for cooking from the fresh water tank...the water that goes in is filtered (unless we fill at home) and we add a bit of bleach solution when we fill elsewhere, just to keep everything fresh. We have never had a problem, and don't expect to as long we watch what goes in and take reasonable precautions.
