As a new member with a 325 Cumins/Allison/ GV unit, I'm trying to figure out what to do regarding carrying a spare. My rig didn't come with one, although it appears that there might have been some provision to carry one under the floor, just forward of the fuel tank. I've got 8r19.5 Michelin XVA's all around, except the tags (which are Coopers, same size).
Forgive me if I'm being dense, but are those of you with spares carrying mounted tires, or just the rubber? And if the tires are mounted, what wheel do you have the tire mounted on? It appears that the front wheel is quite different from the rears.

Hello streamquest, My 345 has a spare
a steel wheel complete and ready with rubber, I assume ? for the drive, tag axle

Thanks John.
Is it safe to assume then that a flat on the front will still leave you stranded since the rear wheels would not fit up front?

As a Noob here I also looked at the front and rear wheels and thought they were very different.
In fact on my 345 they steels, and are all the same... the offset of the wheel rim is mounted inside on the front, and the inner drive axle, and the outer drive axle and the tag they are mounted offset out... if that makes sense!

On our 345 I annually replace the front tires with new and then rotate the front tires to the tag. All the wheels are the same bolt pattern and I can move tires where ever I want. The only steel wheels I have are the inside duals on the drivers.

I am awaiting for your comments/concerns especially since the Tags are larger tires than the drives.

With consistant center of tire warmer I would reduce air pressure, to get the numbers more consistent.
What was the basis for the 85# if not a weight based number, I would reduce front to 80 recheck numbers and maybe even 75 and check.
I have found I get a difference on the sunny side of the vehicle if the right was sunny the front would be right but rear doesn't match.

I was definitely not in Florida.
I just purchased my rig this past winter, and have spent most of the time since then tearing it apart. I'd like to think that I'm on the "comeback trail" at this point, but I still have a LOT of work to do.
As far as the tires go, I have Alcoa aluminum wheels on all six. Do you know if a spare mounted on a steel wheel would replace any/all of them in a pinch? I'm guessing "yes", but I'd like to be sure before I buy one.

up in Bolton Ma with my original 85 345 and need to do an engine/tranny for the next 200k my kids will enjoy.Talking to Bob in NY ( who I guess you Know) for some help.The project is way above my skill level. Have you done the engine on your 345? and did you upgrade to fuel injection , banks exhaust and all the stuff I see on line or just as stock crate engine. Thanks in advance for any advice .

I'm very happy with my 502 swap. I did not do fuel injection but only because the project was unplanned and not budgeted for. I have had great luck with my carb but I know fuel injection would have been a better choice. I did install a Banks Powerpack which I feel was worthwhile.
If funds were not an issue, I would consider a fuel injected 502 with an overdrive transmission and controller. I think that combo is now around $15,000 plus installation.
The extra power will make you wish for more gears!
