Hey Sam,

A little polishing can make quite a difference, and a LOT of polishing can make a helluva difference!! Looks terrific!

If you're heading to Sturgis in August, I know you're a biker. My coach was custom built for Jim McClure back in 1989 and he used it to haul his drag bike from race to race. As you may know, he was the National Champion for a number of years. I've spent quite a bit of time and energy trying to bring it up to another level, and eventually it should be hauling me and a couple of bikes around as well.

If I see you in South Dakota this year, I'll probably be riding a BMW packed with a tent and sleeping bag.

Charly

Hi Charly,

Awesome rig and bike! If I remember correctly, I think you have the bad ass custom dash in your Moho?

Yes - I'll be in Sturgis for the bike rally. I am under contract with the Legendary Buffalo Chip and produce their calendar. So I'll be there with a shiny airstream, bike/s in tow and 3-4 models from the calendar. I just hate my job ;-)

Surprised your not taking the airstream to Sturgis?

Sam

Sam, you've got a good memory. Yes, I did rebuild my dash, and pulled pretty much everything else out of the coach as well. The question is when will I ever get it all back together??

As much as I'm enjoying my Moho as a design project, the fundamental problem that I have with the whole thing is that I enjoy riding so much more than driving. If I'm lucky enough to put together the time for a cross country road trip, the speed, reliability, fuel economy, and fun factor of riding the bike can't be beat. I'll do 10K miles from Boston to Seattle to San Diego and back to Boston in three weeks with no maintenance other than a couple of oil changes. I still have trouble seeing myself as the guy behind the wheel of the motorhome struggling to climb the mountain pass at 50 mph while I pass him doing closer to 100. Maybe I'll be there someday, but not yet.

Meanwhile, considering the MISERABLE job you've got ahead of you at the Chip, I hope to see some pics featuring your coach and a few "adoring Airstream fans". I've seen some of your work, and it would surely spice up this particular thread!!!

Let me know if you need an assistant.

Charly

7 Classic motorhomes at Alumapalooza 2013

I think there may have been 11 Airstream motorhomes at Alumapalooza this year. The most I've ever seen parked in one place. They parked us all together which allowed us to compare mods, fixes, hints and such which was very handy. I would like to post the photo that the official Alumapalooza photographer took of these beauties but I don’t own the rights so I include the website that posts the picture. Check it out
.

Great to meet some great folks too!

And a great time was had by all. . . some of us even learned how to change a fan clutch! Six classics, one Argosy, one early Land Yacht (30'), and 2 or 3 of the larger models.

We were heading out of town in our 280 and I don't think the guy even knew we were there. I don't know how he could have missed us as we were only a few feet away and it was in a 25 mph zone so we weren't going very fast, but we were waving frantically and he never looked our way.

Dover, FL @ Bates Airstream

Ok,
So I've been trying to get to Dover for the past 3 Sundays to see this, but seemed at the last minute plans would change. Today, however, I finally got there! Still, didn't have enough time before they closed to see the 1988 Classic 345! Maybe next Sunday.....

Hey Derek,

Thanks for the pics. Absolutely love that floor. Right out of a classic yacht interior.

Oh thanks! Now I'm going to have to order about 5 gallons Rolite and a case of pads for the Cyclo.

Is nice to know that the later plastic coated alloys will actually polish out. Any tips from that guy on his process.

Years ago I stripped and polished out a 1955 Cessna 180. Swore I'd never get involved I another project like that...

Dakota,

You don't want to be out-shined do you? What if you run into that guy and his moho somewhere in public??

I'll challenge him to a drag race!

Right now I'm trying to keep in looking decent while concentrating on getting it "perfect" mechanically. Next will be the interior. As long as the clear coat holds up I'll probably stick with it. If and when it starts to peel I'll polish. I do appreciate the effort he put into it and really like the look.

That looks like a custom job where someone turned a trailer into a Motorhome.
