so what if he paid 4-5k for polishing, still has 138k miles... which probably means generator has way over 1000 hours. 15K major repairs in the near future.I would not buy it for 30k

Ya know, it kinda depends on your capabilities. And face it, if you are buying a 20 year old coach, you beter have some capabilities. It looks very well cared for. If its as clean underneath as it is topside, I wouldn't care about the milage. I could rebuild the drivetrain and generator easier than I could restore a low milage corroded and dented coach thats been sitting around rotting for 20 years. And its probably going to need as much or more machanical attention as one thats been driven and maintained regulary.
I took a chance on mine and its worked out well but I've been spending an a lot of time making it mechanically "perfect". I have managed to keep it in service and weve put about 15,000 trouble free miles on it in 4 years. Hope to get started on the purdy stuff soon. Seeing that one all polished out is an inspiration.

You have that one right. I looked over my 310's chassis and main floor grid work first, then the mechanicals and electrical, with the interior coming in dead last. The mileage was one of those "yeah maybe" thoughts as turning back mileage on these rigs is super easy.
I just thought the price was low considering I have seen a 95 classic, albeit diesel pusher for sale in excellent condition for $100,000.00++. A 300LE in a recent ad for 65 large with a 28' for 65 large as well (both gassers). Which brings the question....Are the original Classic motorhomes commanding more value than the face lifted Classics 94's 95's
Cheers

Central Texas being known for its above Market Airstream prices, one would wonder why it has not sold yet?
It does seam that the top notch original Classic Motorhomes demand a higher price and more interest than the new body style.

You are completely right on with that, but I was comparing the 30K shiny high mileage to what else the market has to offer. Recently there was a 1988 345 with 36k miles in pristine, original condition, always kept in a heated storage and all the maintenance records for 28k.
138k miles do not only show in the drive train, but also in general wear and tear of Leather and cabinetry and black rivets.
It's also a very personal choice to own a highly polished Airstream and to keep it looking that way.

Peter.
What is your thoughts on the tag axles for the 32 and 34.5 foot models?
Since they are made the same way that the trailer axles are, their life time is also limited to about 25 years, unless parked for an extended period of time, which then is even less.

I know I'm not Peter but the tag was a big concern when buying my 310. There are advantages with the tag, ie braking, stability and maybe a bit more load capacity but the added weight of the bodywork, cabinetry and axle with wheels on my Isuzu diesel was too much.
Cheers

Tony.
Tag axles were only used on the 32 and 34.5 foot and longer motor homes.

thats what I think about the tag axle. I do believe that improper towing may cause this, since it would put a tremendous amount of weight on those poor little axles.
This is before the mounting brackets were welded. Just imagine it falling apart at 65. But who knows, maybe they would have gone another 100k like that...

UMMM Yes Andy I know that.Maybe I wasn't clear, that's why I didn't go for a MH with a tag; the 310 being the largest first gen classic MH without one. I just thought all that extra weight on that tiny diesel would be too much.
Cheers

Well I have a nice 345 that I would strongly consider trading for 94/95 model, If someone is looking to get into the earlier classic. :-)
Seriously the brakes on the tag axel need rebuilding, any leads to the parts for this job?

Richard.
The tag axle brakes are the same as the trailer brakes.
All you need is a pair of 12 inch self adjusting backing plates.

Thanks for the info Andy. I'm not with my motorhome right now, so can't look at it. The brakes on my 1989 345. Are discs on the front and drive axels.
Could there still be drum brakes on the tag axel?
Will return to where it is parked in a couple of weeks and report back then.
Cheers Richard

Forgive my ignorance. Can a tag axle on a motor home be lifted like that of a semi or is it always needed for weight distribution?

Henschen made the tag axles.
They never made one with disc brakes.

Here is a rare bird ..1990 25'
I do not see a generator or the space for one. Edit: Looks like the generator compartment is next to the water heater door on the curbside.
Clear coat failing badly, pinstriping bad, some dents and no good awning makes this way way over priced at 28k, but fun to look at
