Hawley Bowlus truly was the creator of the aluminum trailer. I've actually got a '35 Road Chief that I hope to restore someday. He also designed a motorhome called the Motor Chief. There is only one known to exist that is also awaiting a complete restoration.

Are you saying you have that only one known to exist?? If so, please post some pictures.

Don't I wish……

NO. I have a '35 ROAD Chief (TRAILER) that is the inspiration for the new version that John Long is producing, as referenced in the article.

The only known MOTOR Chief (MOTORHHOME) is in Vince Martinico's Auburn Trailer Collection.

I wonder what the insurance situation would be with this conversion. Very non-standard forward-facing passenger seats with no safety belts. No doubt originally safety belts would not have been required with the 1977 seating, but then it has been radically updated. What is supporting the second row of seats? A plywood box?

I can just see an insurance company totally denying any claims for personal injury after an accident in that vehicle. I would say that quite a bit of the $55M (fifty five million!!?? I guess he means $55K) that he has spent would have to be ripped out.

That Texas 345 is a sweet deal!

Thanks for the information Martin, just another example of my ignorance. I guess I just found my least favorite floorplan in the 20 foot Argosies! Must have suited a lot of people though, I wouldn't doubt.

I wonder if some kind of safety belt could be retrofitted? But then it would be non-standard!

It is pretty flexible. Two benches forward; two benches facing (i.e. dinette); for converted to a bed.

They are easy to spot as the raised floor that is normally only in the cab, extends to the door and the benches both sit on the raised section. Means even if later 'converted' the step is half way down the living area.

What is under all that extra raised floor?

I have no idea bob, but there must be some sort of frame for the seats to bolt down.
