I would love to convert to deep cycle, AGM or Gel design for durability but due to the small tight space of their compartment and the original side post configuration, I'm not sure that this is an option. I've read some threads related to trailer battery replacements.

See if you can get group 34 batteries in AGM or gel. 34 is the same height as the 78.

zamboni, we just stopped at Wally world and bought the largest deep cycle batteries with the highest cca they had. The battery compartment on our 310 is rather large and there was room to spare.
I do like the size of the battery compartment on these motorhomes

....................is your battery compartment? If you have the room, consider a pair (or even 4 for that matter) of 6 volt golf cart batteries. They are the best for deep draw-down situations like those found in house battery usage. Check out the dimensions at Lifeline Marine Batteries - AGM Marine Battery to see how many will fit your battery compartment.
Most major MOHO manufacturers now use the 6 volt golf cart style in their coaches. BTW, I managed to squeeze 2 of these AGM golf cart batteries into the box of my 19CCD. Far superior to the group 24 Interstates that it came with!!
Our battery box opens to the outside like a glove box just under the driver's window. The battery cables come up from below in the center of the box with one battery on each side. The door opening is only about 8"H X 23"W. The group 78 batteries are 7.25"H X 10"W each, plus the 1" for the cables between each battery, gives me about .5" play on each side of the battery.
Did I mention I have GM side posts?
I suppose I could rewire and relocate the "house" batteries to one of the basement storage compartments and the engine battery to the battery glove box.
Zamboni- did you find a solution to your battery problem? I have the same with my 79 MH. Have not found a deep cycle that will fit in the box ( same as yours). Any help is appeciated. Thanks joe
By making up a bracket to take the starter battery underneath just behind the drivers seat I was able to squeeze in 4 off 6V 125 amp/hr deep cycle batteries.

Thanks for the input. Lifelines seem great but a little over my budget. The problem is with the height. The battery box in my 79 is a little over 8 inches so the battery post (if one) must be shorter then 8 inches. joe

I need to replace the factory batteries in my '05 19ft CCD and would like to use the same set up as you. Was it difficult to get the batteries to fit, did you need to modify the battery box and what is the part number for these batteries?
